Johnston (left) presents desigm books to Mrs. Faye Byrd and Furniture Design Books Presented To WCC A chapter of the Phi Beta Lambda, “Sigma Iota”, has been organized at Wilkes Communi ty College. Sigma ,Iota is af filiated with both the national and state organization. Phi Beta Lambda is a na tional organization for students at the college or university le vel who are preparing for ca reers in business education. The chapter presently has 35 members. At this time the or ganization is being self-finan ced through membership dues. Committees have been appoint ed and a chairman for each. The committees are projects, membership, constitution, and the nominating committee. The first project of the year was a book exchange in which the chapter served as a con tact between students wishing to buy or sell used books, A constitution has been writ ten and adopted. The club char ter is expected to be presented to the chapter in the near fu ture. The Phi Beta Lambda State Conference will be held in Ra leigh at the Sheraton-Sir Wal ter Raleigh Hotel, and will be represented by Alex Miller, pre sident and Kenneth Cox. Mr. Ira G. Gambill, instructor in Business Technologists, will ac company them to Raleigh. Other officers of the club are; Don Goodman, vice president; June Darnell, secretary; Don na Hamby, treasurer; and San dra Miller, reporter. Mrs. Jean Tugman, of the division of Bu siness Technologies, and Mrs. Essie Hayes, of the Occupation al Programs, are the advisors to the club. PRESENTING BOOKS: Richard Dr. H. EL Thompson. Wilkes Instructor (Continued From Page One) Mr. Martin was born in Ashe County to Earl and Pauline John son Martin and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Martin was also advisor to the ski club at Wilkes Community College. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Shirley Poe Martin, a stu dent at Wilkes. Study predicts increase in veneraldisease. Richard B. Johnston, president of American -Drew Furniture Companies here, presented fur niture design books to the lib- Business Tech. Students Receive Award The Office Machines Class in the Division of Business Tech nologies was recently notified by Victor Educational Services Institute of the awarding of Cer tificates of Proficiency to se veral Wilkes Community College students. Those students receiving the certificates were Donna Sue Hamby, Helen G. Chapman, Mic key Dyson, Jennie Kanupp, Ken neth E. Cox, Patty Wagoner, Jo el Dills, W. Alex Miller, and C.M, Waugh. Two students, Don na Sue Hamby and Kenneth E. Cox, received Commendation A- wards for their outstanding pro ficiency in using the Automatic Printing Calculator. In 1966, Mr. Johnston reques ted to N.I. Bienenstock, publish er of Furniture World and Fur niture South magazines, that some of the most famous fur niture designbooks be earmarked for the college library, after the college had just been started. The four books given to the college were: “The Hepplewhite Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide” and “Thomas Sheraton's Complete Furniture Works* written by Walter Rendell Sto rey, “English and American Fur niture” by Herbert Cescinsky and George Leland Hunter and the publisher’s latest book, “The History of American Furniture* by N.I. Bienenstock. As president of the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Asso ciation during the past year, Mr. Johnston stated that he was impressed with the interest ;^m>- wn by students throughout the country in learning about home furnishings. The association de veloped an educational kit for high school and college students for use in home economics, in terior deocrating and design classes. Mr. Johnston has order ed many such kits for the sch ools in Wilkes.
