PAGE 4 — THE COUGAR CRY, DECEMBER 17, 1971 Sheila Wriffht, Circle K Sweetheart, and Gwendolyn Howell, Miss Boss, in Christmas Parade. CAROL GENTRY ELECTED MISS VOCATTCWAT, EDITORIAL Lately the newspaper staff members have heard fellow stu dents complain of the lack of extracurricular activities here at Wilkes Community College. We agree that the college is sorely lacking in this area as compared to other areas, especially in regard to academ ically related clubs. In looking over the list of clubs and or ganizations here at Wilkes, we were disappointed to learn that there are only two such clubs now chartered. Phi Beta Lamb da, for business students, and Student National Education Association, for prospective teachers, hardly seem to com prise a well-roimded list. Why should we have more clubs? The staff believes that these organizations should be a part of the total college learn ing experience. This experi ence, as we view it, has three basic aspects: (1) the assimila tion of knowledge, (2) the de velopment of critical intelli gence, and (3) the utilization of this knowledge and critical abil ity. And one of the most stim ulating ways to utilize this knowledge is an organization of students with similar interests. For example, a student who is considering majoring in, or is particulaBly interested in, his tory would have an outlet for his expressions concerning the subject. There are unlimited possibilities of what such a club could do . . . field trips, seminars, the engagement of guest lecturers, etc. Why do we not already have a more well-rounded list of such clubs? Dean Idol says the reason is that the students have indicated very little inter est in this area. He adds that he would be glad to see such organizations formed. Although there is no definite number of prospective members required to obtain a charter, Dean Idol suggests that at least eight students should be willing to join. To obtain a charter, the prospective members must (1) enlist a sponsor and a faculty advisor, (2) write a constitu tion (the only limitation placed on the constitution is that the organization must be open to all students, and (3) get the ap proval of the Student Govern ment Association and the Dean of Student Affairs. Charter forms are available in the Stu dent Personnel Office. So if you are one of the persons who has been complaining about the lack of activities here at Wilkes, start a club!!
