Bepublican Party Candidate
For President
Richard M. Nixon is the Re
publican Party candidate for
re election to the office of
President. Richard Nixon, on
the strength of his record in
office, has achieved an almost
insurmountable lead in the
polls. The economic policy of
President Nixon has resulted in
a 90-day wage-price freeze, fol
lowed by more flexible controls,
an inflation rate that has been
cut in half, a Gross National
Product expanding at a yearly
rate of over 7%, and the intro
duction of a package of tax
cuts. In the field of foreign
policy the President has called
a halt to crisis diplomacy, by
seeking to reduce tension
through visits to Moscow and
Peking. In regard to the war
in Vietnam, the President has
brought home 500,000 men, re

Democratic Candidate For
President
George McGovern, Demo
cratic Senator from South Da
kota, won his party’s nomina
tion against overwhelming
odds. Senator McGovern is a
veteran of 35 combat missions
as a bomber pilot in World War
n and holder of the Distin
guished Flying Cross for his
“heroism and extraordinary
achievement in aerial combat”
This is why George McGovern
says, "It was my firsthand ex
perience with the tragedy of
war that led me to dedicate my
life to the struggle for lasting
peace."
McGovern is critical of the
fact that, although President
Nixon said before his election
he had a “secret plan,” the
Vietnam War has expanded to
include all of lndo*China.
Twen^ thousand Americans
have been killed, and U. Sv

Brooks Hays
Democratic Party Candidate
For U. S. House
Brooks Hays, referred to as a
“latter day Will Rogers” by the
newspapers, is a candidate for
the U. S. House of Representa
tives on the Democratic ticket.
Hays calls himself a “hill man.”
He says he has much in com
mon with the native, independ
ent hill country Republicans of
North C^olina, but has noth
ing in common with the “new
ricli, big city Republicans.”
Mr. Hays has had much ex
perience in political affairs. He
has served 16 years in Con
gress. has been the president
of ^uUiem Baptist Conven
tion twice, an advisor to Presi
dent John F. Kennedy, TVA
Director for President Eisen
hower, was once the National
Heritage Churchman of the
Year; and has had Congression
al and Administrative experi
ence in economic policy, labor
relations, agriculture, and con
servation.
“I had rather be right than
victorious; but I had rather be
counted than evasive; and I had
rather be true than against the
people,” says Hays.
Brooks says that the working
man and woman hold this coun
try together. "It’s the little
people who must be represent
ed more than the powerful,
rich special interests because
political office must be a ve
hicle of human service — not a
means of a ride to power,” says
Brooks Hays.
judi Mitchell
American Independent Party
Candidate for President
John Schmitz was chosen as
the American Independent Par
ty Presidential Candidate when
George Wallace decided to re
main in the Democratic Party.
John Schmitz’s political experi
ence includes having served in
Congress as a Republican Rep
resentative from California.
Schmitz pledges to maintain
America’s defense posture and
keep the United States the
strongest nation on Earth.
About his defense policy, John
Schmitz says, “When survival is
at stake, a second best defense
system is not adequate. We
can’t afford to gamble with our
survival” In Foreign Policy
Schmitz takes a hard line say
ing, “If the Communists want
trade and peaceful coexistence,
let them demonstrate their
goodwill by disbanding their
worldwide network of espion
age and subversion. Let them
tear down the Berlin Wall and
bring up the Iron Curtain. Let
them order their vassals in
North Vietnam to pull their
troops back behind their own
borders.”
John Schmitz maintains that
he could force the Vietnam War
to a rapid conclusion simply by
refusing to allow the export of
American technology to Com
munist countries and their
allies. John Schmitz plans to
rework our national economic
policy and promises a balanced
budget.
In regard to economic policy,
Schmitz has said, “Paying inter
est on the national debt rims
almost $25 billion per year and
is the third largest item in the
federal budget ... If we are
to avoid financial slavery to a
handful of major banks that
loan the government money, we
must balance our budget every
year.”
