WHO'S WHO NOMINEES
BERNADITA MARTIN
BEBNARDITA MARQUEZ
MARTIN
Judy Fergruson
A petite, darkhaired young
woman with a charming accent,
often seen in the Student Com
mons chatting with her friends,
is Bemardita Marquez Martin.
Bemardita (“Bemie” to her
friends) was bom March 20,
1950, in Cotaboto City in the
Philippines to Mr. and Mrs.
Santos V. Marquez. She is the
oply girl in a family with seven
brothers. She went to elemen
tary school in Cogo Carmen, a
suburb of Cebu City. Her fath
er was a fisherman; her moth
er, a housewife.
After she graduated from ele
mentary school, she went to live
in Cebu City with her grand
father. There she attended
Southwestern High. Next, she
went for one semester to Visa-
yas University with a major in
Elementary Education. Her
Aunt Dorothy paid for her edu
cation and wanted her to study
for the teaching profession, but
Bemie was not interested.
Her aunt, who lived in the
United States (Hawaii), came to
the Philippines in December,
1967 for vacation. At her aunt’s
invitation, Bernie came to Ha
waii to finish school and work
10 she could help her parents,
^e lived in an apartment with
her aunt for four years.
Bemie’s first job was as a
waitress in a coffee house. She
had leamed English in school,
but she leamed more about it
there. Then for a year she
worked as a waitress on week
ends, attended business college,
and worked at a theater as a
cashier during the week. After
she completed her course, the
school found her a job with
Honolulu Savings and Loan
wliere she worked two years
(1970-1972).
She met her husband on a
balcony at her apartment build
ing when he was looking for
someone else. They were mar
ried a year later. For a year
they lived in an apartment in
Hawaii. Then they moved to
the Mainland to find a home.
Bemie found the United
States considerably different
from her home. Whereas Ha
waii and the Philippines are
small, tropical, and cosmopoli
tan, she found the States to be
large and complex with differ
ent climate, language, customs
and foods. Also, she pointed
out that in the Philippines
there are fewer luxuries and
jobs are lower paying and hard
er to find than on the Main
land.
Her husband found a job, but
she did not. She decided to
come to school here at WOC
beginning Fall Quarter. The
first quarter was the hardest.
Like most foreigners, she felt
homesick, out of place, and un
wanted until she started mak
ing friends.
She said, M like people h^re.
They are friendly. The per
sonnel and teachers are consid
erate and helpfuL I feel that
1 am a part of the community
here. It is a wonderful feel
ing. I enjoy my friends.”
Bemardita is interested in
biology and would like to study
medical technology.
We know more about teach
ing rats, and are vaxxe effec
tive with psychotics and neur
otics than with freshmen.
— Joiin Weir
To think of learning as a
preparaticm for something be
yond learning is a defeat of the
process. The most important
attitude than can be formed is
that of desire to go on learning.
