President’s Message
SYLVIA CHURCH
Soon it will be time to vote in
national and state elections. This
age old process is an integral part
of our democracy, allowing
citizens to decide who will
represent us in the halls of
government. If recent trends
continue, only a small percentage
of eligible voters will exercise the
right and privilege of voting. Sad
to say, but many Americans
question if their vote means
much, if anything, to the process.
Many thousands of others have
never registered to vote upon
reaching the age of 18. This
election is crucially important for
our state and our country. Your
vote does make a difference! The
majority voice should be repre
sentative of all our people - not
just a few. If you have not
registered to vote - do so. If you
doubt the impact of your
individual vote, don’t! It, added
to others, is the only voice of the
people that matters. November 4,
1980, is Election Day. Study the
candidates and the issues. Vote!

Fall tryouts for the 1980-81
Wilkes Community College
Cheerleaders was held on Septem
ber 22 at 3:00 p.m. in the gym. Of
the ten girls who tried out for the
squad, only five were chosen.
These five, along with the
previous five chosen in spring
tryouts will compose the squad.
The girls were given one week of
practice prior to tryouts in order
to learn one dance routine, one
standard cheer with a stunt, one
cheer of their own, two jumps of
their choice, and two chants. The
girls were also required to respond
to a question concerning cheer-
leading as a part of their tryout
procedure. After the judges had
seen the girls perform, they
marked their score sheets and they
were tallied. The five lucky girls
scoring the highest were Debbie
Fergeson, Sylvia Church, Crystal
Stone, Terry Woodie, and Lori
Norton. From these five, a
co-captain will be chosen. These
girls, along with sophomore
cheerleaders Diane Watt, Sherry
Martin, June Brooks, Yvette
Mikeal, and captain Bonnie
Phipps, will be cheering for the
Cougars throughout the coming
year. We would like to congratu
late the new cheerleaders and wish
them lots of luck. A special
thanks goes to Brenda Jolly,
cheerleading sponsor, for making
tryouts run so smoothly.
Personality Profile
In this month’s edition,
Personality Profile takes the
privilege to interview a very
interesting personality. I’m speak
ing of Weaverville commuter
Mike Cogdill. Here’s the run
down:
1 have one word to explain
Mike Cogdill, “participation.”
Entering his second year as a
student at WCC, Mike is very
much involved in extra-curricular
activities. Serving as Sophomore
Class President, Mike has the
chance to mingle with his
classmates and help make this
educational year enjoyable. Mike
is also the editor of the Cougar
Cry, serves on the “Cougar”
yearbook staff; is a member of
WCC’s Phi Beta Lambda organi
zation; and, if time permits, will
play intercollegiate basketball.
While at Wilkes Community,
Mike is working toward his
Associates in Arts degree. After
graduation, Mike plans to further
his studies at one of three
universities: University of Geor
gia, University of Tennessee, or
The University of Missouri where
he will study toward a BA degree
in Broadcast-Journalism. In
working with Mike, I have found
he possesses the characteristics of
academic ability and motivation,
both of which are mandatory to
achieve such goals.
Mike’s hobbies include water-
skiing, athletics, and enjoying the
company of his friends. If you
have not met this “Wild and
Crazy Guy,” take the opportunity
to stop and say hello. Keep on
reading the Cougar Cry’s Per
sonality Profile. The next person
ality could be yours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
