Homecoming
1981
On January 24, WCC played
host to Davidson Community
College for what proved to be a
very exciting and rewarding
basketball game. During halftime
of the game, students, faculty,
staff, and alumni enjoyed the
1981 Homecoming Court Pre
sentation. All were pleased as last
year’s queen. Miss Lena Lovette,
crowned Miss Janine Neaves of
Ashe County as the 1981
Homecoming Queen. Joining
Janine as her court were Miss
Denise Rhodes, Maid-of-Honor;
Miss Debbie Gwaltney, Sopho
more Attendant: and Miss Kim
Mecimore, Freshman Attendant.
There were many well-deserving
contestants, and each felt honored
by being chosen.

WCC Who’s Who Selected
By: Milce Carlton
Personality Profile kicks off the
year 1981 with a “very interesting
but great personality.” Personal
ity Profile brings to its readers,
yet another outstanding member
of the student body. I’m speaking
of Phillip Greene from Deep Gap,
North Carolina. Here’s the
rundown on Phillip.
Phillip attended West Wilkes
High School in Millers Creek,
North Carolina and graduated
from there in 1976. Shortly
thereafter, in August of 1976,
Phillip joined the United States
Army. After the “hard” eight-
week military basic training,
Phillip was transferred to Frank
furt, Germany. While there, he
was placed in the military
intelligence program. Phillip com
mented, “The work was very
challenging, and we had to be on
our toes at all times.” During the
two-and-a-half years in Germany,
Phillip played in highly competi
tive tennis tournaments for the
Frankfurt International Tennis
Club. He was also a member of
the Frankfurt American Tennis
Club whereas he traveled through
out Europe.
In August of 1979 when Phillip
completed his military service, he
decided to enter Wilkes Commun-
Students for inclusion in Who’s
Who in American Junior Colleges
were chosen from the Wilkes
Community College Sophomore
Class on January 5. These
students were chosen by a select
committee from Wilkes Commun
ity College on the following
national basis: participation in
school activities, scholarship,
leadership ability, grade point
average, and future usefulness
and potential in society.
The honor was limited to
twenty-two of our sophomores
this year, and those individuals
selected are: Cheryl Beshears,
Nancy Boggs, Billy Bowles,
Brenda Bumgarner, Jamie Cline,
Mike Cogdill, Debbie Eldreth,
Personality Profile
ity College. Phillip is enrolled in
the College Transfer program
working towards his Associate m
Arts degree. After graduation, he
plans to transfer to one of three
colleges - Gardner-Webb, Win
gate, or Campbell College. After
completing study at a senior
institution, Phillip hopes to work
for the state department. He also
plays intercollegiate tennis here at
WCC.
Phillip’s hobbies include tennis,
skiing, and other physical sports.
If you haven’t met Phillip Greene,
then you’re really missing a great
guy.
Keep on reading the Cougar
Cry’s Personality Profile because
we’re watching you!!
Debbie Eller, Alan Grant, Mary
Markle, Virginia Pace, David
Parker, Bonnie Phipps, Kristi
Phipps, Delane Quiver, Shawn
Redding, Owen Schweers III, Jeff
Shaw, Eileen Tomeny, Elizabeth
Wagoner, Michelle Watkins, and
Jeanne Williams.
Congratulations on being se
lected to represent Wilkes Com
munity College in this prestigious
national honor!
Whenever I try to sock some away
For that inevitable rainy day.
My long range plans all fade and
fizzle
From taking care of the daily
drizzle.
