PAGE 2 THE COUGAR CRY. SEPTEMBER 1, 1981 Editor*s Comer The beginning of a new school year is almost always filled with confusion, especially for the helpless Freshmen that are shoved into an unfamiliar environment and wished good luck. Fortunate ly, aids have been provided for the bewildered newcomers. Hope fully, no one will be forced to wonder the halls of WCC forever searching in vain for Basketweav- ing 0101. The first of the aids is the staff in Student Services. The SS staffers are there just to help struggling Freshmen find their way. The office is located right in the middle of Thompson Hall and is quiet easy to find. The other important aid is a mobile one - the members of the Student Government Association. These representatives of the Student Body can easily be recognized as they usually wear red and white shirts that have SO A printed on them. They will be scattered around the campus to seek Freshman to help. There is one thing that all Freshmen should keep in mind: Every Sophomore and Instructor here was once a lonely Freshman. Good luck and welcome aboard!! Bob Watts - Co-Editor Bookstore News Welcome Freshmen and Wel come Back Sophomores!!!!! It’s been a long, hot summer without you, and we in the Bookstore are glad you’re here. We have all of your required and suggested books and supplies in stock and we are ready to help you with them. Our hours are from 9 A.M. until 3 P.M. and from 5:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. except Friday evenings. (That’s our courting night.) When you pay for your textbooks in the Bookstore you will receive a CASH RECEIPT. Be sure to keep this receipt in a safe place until you know that all of the books are the right ones and the ones you will need for your classes. With this receipt you may exchange any book or get a ;j?r » BETTY THOMPSON BOOKSTORE MANAGER full cash refund if books are unmarked. This policy is good for the first two weeks of classes. This gives you an opportunity to exchange books for courses that you may change or ones that you may drop. We have a good buy-back policy here at WCC. The last week in each quarter we buy back all of the text books that are going to continue to be used on our campus. We buy them back at one half of the original price. You may purchase used books at three fourths of the original price. If you have a scholarship, you may charge your books in the bookstore with a permission slip from the Business Office. You will have three weeks to take care of your charges. We not only have required materials in the Bookstore, but we have a lot of fun “things” too. We have beauiful back-packs to carry it all in. You will find greeting cards to send back home, sweaters, jackets and shirts to dress you up, down, or whatever, all kinds of goodies - candies, health snacks, chips, and gum. If you need a special gift, we will help you with that too. This is your bookstore and we want you to feel right at home when you come in. We are anxious to get to know you so come in often and give us that privilege. Fine Arts Corner To open up our fall quarter, the Drama Department will present a hilarious, student directed pro duction, “The Convention”: written by Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf (playwrights at the famous “Maude” series). Wes Martin, a 1979 Governors School Attendant, has been seen in roles ranging from high school produc tions to Tom Dooley’s understudy in 1980. On our stage, he has been seen in “Equus” and “Fiddler on the Roof’ to name a few. Wes’ direction of this play will exhibit his past years’ experience. Assistant director is Pennie Self. Although Pennie is just a freshman at WCC, she has been seen in “Camelot,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “Copjjelia”. She attended competition at various levels in high school drama and in 1980 received an acting award from the Carolina Dramatics Association. Also featuring, is the talent of Randy Ashley, a WCC newcomer. Although not inexper ienced in the field of Drama, Randy’s credits include various high school competitions and roles in such plays as “Junie Moon,” and “His Wife.” Donna Duncan, a patrion of our theatre, will perform her first lead role. Although Donna has danced solos many times, her talent in theatre is just beginning to shine! Let’s not forget the stage manager, techni cian, publicity and “anything else” man who will be “Bob” Baity. Bob, as the rest of the cast, has performed in our theatre but this will be his first technical part. The comedy tells of Walter (Randy) and Margarett (Donna) on their first out-of-town conven tion together. They unexpectedly lose their reservations at a nice hotel and are forced to stay in a rank rundown motel. Feeling every bit the women’s libber, Margarett decides to open up her frustrations on her husband and with this the story starts to unfold, presenting a light and humorous marital dispute. Under the supervision of “Bud” Mayes and new staff member, Ken Green, this per formance promises to enlighten and enrich the start of a fresh new quarter. Performances will be presented September 1, 2, 3, & 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the college auditorium. Advanced tickets may be obtained by contacting Betty Thompson at the college bookstore. Tickets will also be on sale at the door. f SURPRISE!!! Student Activities If you’re a “group” person, you’ll enjoy student life at Wilkes Community College. Stanley 319 Replacement for Chairperson Recently the Mathematics and Science Department acquired a new addition to the staff. Its name is the Apple II Color Computer and it is really catching on. The computer was meant for Faculty and Students alike, but is is clear that the students have taken over and will not relinquish control. The main reason behind this problem seems to be the ability of the computer to keep the operator’s interest whether he is working out the parameters of a graph, solving inequalities, or playing Penny Arcade. Although the abilities of the computer seem to be almost limitless, its basic attraction seems to be the games that cem be programmed into the board. There are several of these games ranging from Supermath to Pinball, but the favorite is the WCC Sports Report As the 1981-82 academic school year begins, college coaches throughout the country are completing their intercollegiate sports schedule. Here at Wilkes Community College coach Joe Linney has worked hard organiz ing a competitive sports schedule. The WCC varsity basketball team competes in the Western Tarheel Conference. The season opener against Western Piedmont prom ises to be a very exciting game. In early spring the varsity tennis and golf teams will be competing for the conference title. They were very successful last season, posting several players with all conference honors. This year promises to be just as successful as last year. The Wilkes Community College sports program would like the support of fans as well as good athletes. Anyone that would like to be a part of a growing program, please contact coach Joe Linney in the Technical Arts Building. A 7:30 24-27 Conference Tournament A TEA infamous Apple-Trek, which has invaded the minds of many upcoming students. The game uses mental rather than physical skill to fight through a vast array of problems from Space Storms to the deadly Klamons. But winners feel satisfied, after all, it’s not every day that the universe is saved by a lowly college student. The games are fun and exciting but there is so much more to the computer. It graphs anything from logarithmic functions to the number of pencils that are broken by students per month. It also is helpful in solving many mathe matical problems including calcu lus and trigonometry. The computer is easily programmable and with just a little study and work any person can enter the programming side of computers. The computer is versatile, interesting, entertaining, and can even whistle “Dixie”, if program med to do so, and I am sure it will be a great asset to the college for years to come.
