THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE
VOLUME 11 - NO. 2

“So You’re
A Freshman...”
Freshman Elections
By: Janet Lael
As the routine began to become
familiar and a pattern began to
take form, another college year
began to get well under way at
Wilkes Community College. For
the freshman, it is a year of
discovery as well as a time for
furthering ones own leadership
ability. One of the greatest
opportunities open to freshmen is
seeking and retaining an office in
the Student Government Associa
tion (SGA) at W.C.C. The SGA is
the student governing and
representative body at W.C.C.
and this organization plays an
important role in the recognition
of student needs and concerns.
The elected Freshman officers can
provide valuable insight and
leadership that the SGA needs to
be effective and truly be a
representative body.
The qualifications to run for a
Freshman office are relatively
simple and well defined. To run
for an elective officer, a Freshman
must be in good standing with
W.C.C., carry a minimum course
load of twelve credit hours, have a
cumulative quality point average
of 2.25, and after elections, must
maintain a quality point average
of 2.00. These qualifications are
set to insure that each Freshman
interested in seeking an office can
do so with the full knowledge of
what the limitations and expecta
tions that are set with each desired
office.

NCCCCSGA Fall Conference
By: Keith Barlow
Student governments often
limit their learnings to campus
affairs; however, the recent Fall
Conference of the North Carolina
Comprehensive Community Col
lege Student Government Associa
tion (NCCCCSGA) at Mission
Valley Inn in Raleigh demonstra
ted that the Wilkes Community
College Student Government
Association has graduated into
the area of state level student
affairs. During the October 28-31
conference, the Wilkes SGA
participated with an eight member
delegation, including Tonya
Woodie, Jeanne Williams, Paul
Newton, Keith Johnson, Robert
Little, Deke Wade, Keith Barlow,
and Steve Desautels. And if the
involvement in this year’s Fall
Conference is any indication, this
delegation has quickly pushed
Wilkes to the top of the
NCCCCSGA.

Fall Conference
By Keith Johnson
The North Carolina Compre
hensive Community College Stud
ent Government Association an
nual Fall Conference was held in
Raleigh at the Mission Valley Inn
on October 28. The conference
was hosted by Wake and Wilson
Technical Institutes and lasted
thru October 31. Many disting
uished guests were on hand such
as Governor Jim Hunt, who
spoke at the welcoming assembly,
and former senator Robert
Morgan. The conference was an
accomplishment with many ideas,
problems and issues being
discussed by the 40 different
schools participating.
Wilkes Community College was
represented respectively by a
delegation of eight students and
their advisor, Alan Whittington.
Deke Wade was appointed
chairman of the newly found
sub-committee, new ideas. He
now joins three other WCC
students on the NCCCCSGA
executive committee council.
Congratulations Deke!
Wilkes Community College was
represented at the NCCCCSGA
level with two committee chair
men, Keith Barlow (Platform)
and Steve Desautels (Legislative
Liason), as well as by Jeanne
Williams as NCCCCSGA Trea
surer. An opening during the
conference allowed Wilkes to nail
down another executive member,
however, as Deke Wade volun
teered to chair the subcommittee
for Conference New Ideas.
Pushing the tally of Wilkes SGA
members who are NCCCCSGA
executive members to four. This
year’s participation exceeds the
combined total for Wilkes
Community College has more
students active on the state level
than any other institution in
North Carolina.
For those not familiar with the
NCCCCSGA, it is an organiza
tion designed to promote better
student government as well as
push for better academic achieve
ment within the Community
College System as a whole.
Whenever the NCCCCSGA and
its 46 dues-paying members
convene for conference, however,
its purpose begins to mean much
more. The various institutions
with their individual problems
become a unit, presenting their
common problems and striving
together to reach practical
answers. The fellowship and
exchange of ideas can prove to be
significant in the advancement of
our community colleges and
technical institutes, even if it is
only within the Student Govern
ment Association. At conference,
leadership is sown and a grande
exchange of ideas is harvested.
The NCCCCSGA has estab
lished standing committees and
subcommittees for troubleshoot
ing not only the problems of the
organization itself, but for the
institutions and community col
lege systems as a whole. The
committees include: Constitution,
Convention, Delegates with Ath
letics and New Ideas as subcom
mittees, Legislative Liason, Plat
form, Public Relations, Specific
Problems with Veterans, Allied
Heahh, and Division subcommit
tees, Minorities, Finance, and
Advisors. It is within these
committees that the Wilkes
delegation has its strong represen

tation.
Legislative Liason, the NC
CCCSGA committee responsible
for legislative matters which
concern students as well as the
community College system, is
chaired by Wilkes SGA President
Steve Desautels. At this past
conference Steve readied his
committee for upcoming State
expansion budget requests and
studies. This expansion budget
determines the funding fate of
many issues within the community
College system, including equip
ment allocations and literacy
training.
Platform Committee, chaired
by Keith Barlow, is the NCCCC
SGA Committee responsible for
identifying researching, wording,
and in assistance with the Public
Relations Committee, communi
cating the issues effecting the
North Carolina Community Col
lege System. During the Fall
Conference, Platform began a-
new, dropping seven previous
platform issues and two previous
resolutions, in order to build a
new platform foundation for the
NCCCCSGA. One issue and one
