Cougars fall to
Mitchell

On Thursday, January 7, the
Wilkes Community College Cou
gars played host to Mitchell
Community College of Statesville
and came out with a hard fought
75-60 loss. In the first half, the
Cougars took advantage of a hot
shooting hand and jumped out to
a quick 8-0 lead. Mitchell,
however, came back strongly to
tie the score at 19-19 with 9:00 left
in the half. Each team played
tough the rest of the half, but
despite the 53.5*% shooting by
WCC, Mitchell held on to a slim
32-29 lead at the half.
The Cougars wasted no time
regaining the lead in the first 3
minutes of the second half as they
outscored Mitchell 6-2 in the
stretch. The half was to be
another exciting one as the lead
changed hands 5 times in the first
10 minutes. In the next 5 minutes
Mitchell jumped out to a 10 point
lead and this proved to be the
final blow for WCC.
“Their size wore us down was
the only difference in the ball
game,” commented Coach Joe
Linney after the game. Linney
went on to say that his squad
“made too many mental errors.”
The Cougars were lead in scoring
by Scott Lakey, whom Linney
also praised for his defensive play,
and Todd Ware, with 22 and 18
points respectively. Mitchell was
lead by Bernard Baxter with 24.

Gilreath 10, Winebarger 4,
Mitchell 2, Walker, Reid,
Motsinger.
Mitchell — Wise 8, K. Helms 9,
Baxter 24, Gaither 16, Rucker
