The winners of Freshman attendant. Sophomore attendant, Maid of Honor and Homecoming Queen were an nounced. This year’s Freshman attendant is Miss Kathy Williams. Kathy graduated from West Wilkes High School and is in the College Transfer program. She is very active here at WCC and is currently the only woman playing on a men’s intramural basketball team. Kathy plans to transfer to East Carolina University and major in art for a possible career in commercial art. She comment ed on being chosen Freshman Attendant, “It was really an honor to receive Freshman attendant because there were a lot of deserving candidates.” Miss Naomi Smith was chosen as Sophomore attendant. She is 19, and a graduate from Wilkes Central High School. Naomi is a member of the Organization of Ebony Students and is in Secretarial Science Technology. She plans to work as a secretary as well as train to be a stewardess for Eastern Airlines. Naomi told the Cougar Cry, “I was very surprised, but also pleased to win. It was indeed an honor to be chosen by my school friends to represent them on the Homecom ing Court.” The Maid of Honor for 1982 is Miss Kelia Dowell. She is 19, a Freshman, and is active in the Art Club. Kelia graduated from East Wilkes High School and is enrolled in the College Transfer program. She plans to finish her education at Appalachian State and become a commercial artist. Kelia also plans to go into modeling. On being chosen Maid of Honor, “I was very excited and honored by receiving the title.” The 1982 Homecoming Queen is Miss Denise Rhodes. Miss Rhodes is a sophomore, and graduated from Wilkes Central High School. She is in the College Transfer program here at WCC and plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in nursing. Denise is active in the Alpha Omega Club, was a Cougar Cheerleader, and was Maid of Honor in last year’s Homecoming. She commented on being chosen as this year’s Homecoming Queen: “I was very pleased to be a part of the 1982 Homecoming Court. Being crowned Homecoming Queen by Dr. Daniel was a great thrill and something I shall always hold dear. I appreciate the work that went into the reception following the game, the dance, and all the preparations for the event. I felt that those involved did a great job!” Get Involved With Your S. G.A. The Student Government As sociation (SGA for short) of Wilkes Community College is designed to promote the general welfare of the college in a democratic fashion and to facilitate communication between the student body, the administra tion, and the faculty. The SGA provides avenues through which students can promote interest in student activities on and off campus. So why shouldn’t you get involved? The annual Student Govern ment election will be held the last two weeks of April, 1982. At this time all officers of the SGA and Sophomore Senators shall be elected. If you will be a returning student in good standing, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.25, can maintain a grade point average of 2.00 while in office, and will be carrying twelve (12) credit hours each quarter during your sophomore year, then you are eligible to hold office. The SGA needs good people, who will be dedicated and willing Rv KELIA DOWELL Maid of Honor NAOMI SMITH Sopliomore Attendant Dan Parks, the president of Key City Bakery, presented a one year scholarship to Stephen Holland of Sparta, North Carolina, to study the Hotel Restaurant Manage ment Program at Wilkes Com munity College. The one year Food Service Scholarship is in memory of Frank W. Burrell and is named the Frank W. Burrell Scholarship. The scholarship is for students in the Hotel Restaurant Manage ment Program at Wilkes Com munity College. The program is a very popular two year program at WCC. People in this program prepare themselves for supervis ory and management positions in the food service industry. The program emphases food preparation, efficiency, equip ment utilization, the application of business skills to food service, and supervision and management of personnel. The program is under the direction of Robert T. Johnston, a graduate of Cornell University. The recipients of the scholar ship are selected on the basis of ability, aptitude, ambition, chara cter, and need. Congratulations to the first recipient, Stephen Holland! KATHY WILLIAMS Freshman Attendant Bloodmobile To Attend WCC The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be attending Wilkes Com munity College on April 28, 1982, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once again. Mu Alpha Theta, who is sponsoring the bloodmobile visit, urges everyone, students, faculty, and staff, to give a pint of blood to the Red Cross. “No one is wrong all the time. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.” S.G.A. Election Procedure to work for their college. Remember, take pride in your college and take an active part in all school events. The election will be held to fill the following SGA offices: President Secretary Vice-President Treasurer Sophomore class officers and four Sophomore Senators will be elected at the same time as the SGA officers. The officers to be elected for sophomores are: President, Vice-President, Secre tary, and Treasurer. 1. Eligible students may become candidates for office by filing a petition signed by twenty-five (25) students with the Election Committee. These petitions shall be turned in at a time des ignated by the Election Committee. 2. The petitions will be available in the Student Services Office on April 1, 1982. The petitions should be picked up by Tuesday, April 13, 1982. 3. Petitions must be returned to Student Services by Friday, April 16, 1982, at 4:00 p.m. 4. Nominations shall be posted on the Student Bulletin Board at least one week prior to the date of the election. 5. Full campaign April 19, 1982, thru April 23, 1982. 6. Special - 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1982 - MEET THE CANDIDATES! 7. The election is scheduled for Monday, April 25, 1982 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:(X) p.m. and on Tuesday, April 27, 1982 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:(X) p.m. in the TTiompson Hall Student Commons. 8. Announce winners April 28, 1982. QUALinCATIONS FOR VOTING SGA Officers: Any student enrolled at Wilkes Community College, carrying a minimum of ten (10) credit hours (or paying student activity fees) shall be entitled to vote for SGA President, Vice-President, Secre tary and Treasurer.
