PAGE TWO — THE COUGAR CRY, JANUARY 13.1983 Editorial ffiS8SSS8S3SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS838SSSS$S^ r Over the holidays, I had the opportunity to travel out West. As I passed through Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and finally Colorado, I was continually reminded of how beautiful our state of North Carolina is. Even though the trip to Colorado Springs was enjoyable, I was glad to return to home. On the trip west, we passed through the Mississippi Valley area of Tennessee and Arkansas and was witness to the incredible damage caused by the floods from the Mississippi and its tributaries. Everyone in the car was kind of “shaking in the car seats” as we passed through a tornado watch area in Central Arkansas; we were constantly watching for something to sweep us to the “Land of Oz.” If you love boring flat lands, houses only three miles apart, and gas stations at the end of each tankful. I would encourage you to move to the western section of Oklahoma and the Texas Pan Handle. Only Eastern Oklahoma closely resembled North Carolina. As we approached Amarillo, Texas, we ran into semi-blizzard conditions; for all you snow freaks, you haven’t seen snow until you go to Texas and watch the wind blow the snow. Once again we encountered beautiful, but deadly country when we headed northwest from Texas toward New Mexico, and the southern border of Colorado. It was really boring here; and car seats don’t ride too soft at 100 mile intervds. The Rocky Mountains of Colorado are beautiful scenery, but they are not beautiful driving especially if you like to slide up and down. If you think its cold here in the morning, try Colorado Springs where the only thing you worry about is if you’ll get the car door open before your fingers freeze off at 3 degrees and the sun shining. After all this. North Carolina was a sight for sore eyes. I was glad to return home where we only worry about early frost, if it will rain, inches of snow instead of feet... ... , , . There has been many changes made from the last quarter, and things are really picking up. Many activities are being planned for the rest of the school year. Just to name a few we plan to attend the Sta^e Competition in the spring. This is where members compete against other members from around the state in subjects pertaining to the business field. Winners will then compete in the National Competition held during the summer. We also plan to attend the National Leadership Conference to be held this July in San Francisco, California. If you are interested in joining we meet every Thursday at 1:00 p.m., in room 145. Our most recent activity was the construction of a float for the Christmas parade. A lot of time and work was put into this project. There was also time for fun and getting to know each member by working together. Other activities we enjoyed were the Regional Leadership Confer ence in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and the State Leadership Confer ence held at Eastern Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. While there, we attend ed workshops that helped us to develop job searching skills, and the ability to communicate effectively in situations. We also had some free time for touring the local sites and shopping. Baptist Student Union (BSU) By: Steve Williams The BSU has been very busy the past two months doing many exciting activities. On November 7, some of our members attended Union Baptist Church for the morning service and afterwards Mu Alpha Theta The Math Club has attempted to meet several times over the past few months. At one meeting, our sponsor. Dr. Josephine Hendrix, introduced NIM, a number game, to attending club members. The shirts ordered by the Math Club through the bookstore have arrived, and every club member is urged to go by and pick up their’s soon. Coming up in the spring, the club will once again sponsor a bloodmobile with the American Red Cross. We hope you will support this spring time event. There will be a required meeting on Wednesday, January 12, at 9:50 in Room 410 so a yearbook photo can be made. At our next meeting, plans will be made concerning our spring trip. Gary Eldreth — Not to make any New Year’s resolution Gregg Roten — No more video games Melanie Carven — To exercise every day Denise Carroll — Use time more wisely Robin Luffman — Not to get behind in my school work Lorelei Williams — To find a new way to have fun Harold Johns — Not to make any New Year’s resolution drove to Kim Fitzgerald’s house in Wilbar for a nature hike. While there, they enjoyed a delicious cookout, a refreshing and exhili- rating 2Vi hour hike around the mountains and a lovely lake, and some fun social games. Later on that day around 6:00, they built a huge bonfire and roasted marsh mallows. It was truly an enjoyable experience for all those who went. For the month of December, two of our members, Lorelei Williams and Barbara Thompson, went to the supermarket and bought a variety of holiday foods including ham, potatoes, fruit, sugar, flour, milk, and much more for the Lunsford’s; a needy family, Christmas dinner. The BSU also gave $15.00 to Anna Chilton, a burnt out victim, along with another $5.00 which some one else donated to us to give to her. We had also planned to go Christmas caroling with the Oak Grove Baptist Church Youth Choir at Vesper’s Nursing Home, but the event was cancelled because of the snow we had on December 19. Also, the Brushy Mountain Baptist Association has asked us to take the fifth Sunday in January and teach Sunday School at Lewis Fork Baptist Church. They have also asked three people to give their personal testimonies. We need thirteen people, so if you’re interested please come to our meeting. Finally, the BSU plans to attend the Baptist Student Union Conference at Caraway in March. It will begin on a Friday around 5:00 and last until Sunday afternoon. There will be leader ship meetings, state election for officers, and other diverse activities. We need 15 people to go and the cost will be about $28.00. If you are interested in any of the above activities, please come to our meetings or contact a member of BSU. 9. Name means “flowery” and is sometimes called “The Sunshine State.” 10. By: Keith Johnson SGA News The Student Government As sociation has been busy with several projects. Besides helping out with the Winterfest, we have had a Christmas dance and sponsored a needy family for Christmas. This Year’s Winterfest was a great success, with various artists from across the state performing each night. We would like to thank everyone for their interest and support. The SGA also planned a Christmas dance which was held at the Wilkes County Armory on December 21, from 8:00-12:00 p.m. The dance featured Bullet, and refreshments were donated by the Coca-Cola Company and Foster Beverages. In addition to this, the SGA sponsored a needy family, consisting of a mother and three children, for Christmas. Several bags of groceries were purchased along with an outfit of clothing for each member of the family and a toy for each child. These presents were delivered to their house on Monday, December 20, by the SGA members. Looking a little ahead, several members of the SGA will be attending the NCCCCSGA Wint er Conference.
