Tarheel Basketball
Tournament To Be At WCC
Western Tarheel Conference
The Western Tarheel
Basketball Conference will be
held at WCC on February 25th
- 26th, 1983. There will be 2
games on February 25th; one
at 7:30 and the other following
at 9:00. On Saturday the 26th,
the finals will be played at 7:30
p.m. The winner Saturday
night will go to the regional
tournament in South Carol
ina. Of the 56 Community
Colleges, 4 will be in the
tournament, they are Surry,
Mitchell, Western Piedmont,
and Wilkes Community
College. Come out these nights
and root the Cougars on to
victory.
BRIEFS
BASKETBALL
The basketball team will be
playing their last home game
for this season on Friday,
February 18, 1983, at 7:30 in
the College Gymnasium. The
game will be with Bluefield
Community College from
Virginia. We encourage all
WCC students to come out and
support the Cougars for their
final victory.
SOUTH PACIFIC
AUDITIONS
Auditions for “South
Pacific” will be held in the
College Auditorium from 7 - 9
p.m. on Wednesday, March 9,
and Thursday, March 10. The
auditions are open to anyone
from the college or community.
Those wishing to audition can
come either night. Actors,
singers, dancers, and
technicians are needed.
A script and music from the
show are available in the
library reserve section.
Singers should come prepared
to sing, and dancers dressed to
dance. If you have questions,
see Bud Mayes.
YOUR NEWSPAPER
The Cougar Cry is the
student newspaper, and it is
and will be what you, the
students, make it. The College
Administration will provide
advisory leadership and
arrange for financial support,
but you, as a student, must
make it what you want it to be
as a newspaper.
The Cougar Cry offers an
opportunity for you to gain
experience in journalism as
well as excellent training in
organization and manage
ment.

Kim Fitzgerald
STUDENT PROFILE
Kim Fitzgerald is the
daughter of Samuel and
Dorothy Fitzgerald of Wilbar.
She is a sophomore at WCC,
and enrolled in the college
transfer program of Associate
in Arts. Kim is a 1981 graduate
of West Wilkes High School
were she received a letter in
chorus, a position on Who’s
Who, a membership in the
Beta Club, and the position of
marshall at graduation her
junior year. Here at WCC Kim
is a member of the Baptist
Student Union for which she
recently hosted a fun filled day
including a hike in the
mountains, a picnic, and a
marshmallow roast all which
took place near her home in
Wilbar. Kim has held several
honors during her stay at
WCC. Last year she was
chosen to parfcipate in the
graduation as a marshall.
During her second year, Kim
has been selected as a member
of Who’s Who in American
Junior Colleges, and she was
elected Maid of Honor at. the
homecoming elections in
January. Kim also works part-
time at the library here at
WCC on a work-study
program, and she is a Sunday
School teacher at Union
Baptist Church.
After graduation, Kim plans
to transfer to either East
Carolina or Appalachian
State University where she
plans to major in psychology
and eventually become a
counselor of some kind,
preferably working with
young people. She also plans
to minor in a foreign language,
either French or Spanish,
which she will teach in case
she cannot find a counseling
job to her liking.
Kim is originally from
Washington, D.C. from which
her and her family moved here
in 1976. Between the two, Kim
openly admits that N.C. is her
favorite because of her passion
for outdoor life. Among her
hobbies are hiking, canoeing,
fishing, bicycling and jogging.
She also enjoys reading,
listening to classical music,
and playing the piano.
Kim has a very positive and
appreciative outlook on life.
She thoroughly enjoys being
with her family and, she is
sincerely thankful for the love
and support that her family
has given her. As she pointed
out, “If a person has both God
and a good family, then they
can get through anything.”
Not only does Kim have an
encourageable view of life
itself, but she projects this
view onto those around her.
If you don’t meet Kim before
you leave WCC, you will miss
knowing someone with an
outgoing personality, viva
cious sense of humor, and a
love for meeting new people.

Hugh Hash
STAFF PROFILE
Hugh Hash has been
instructing students here at
WCC for 12 years in such areas
as diesel engines, machine tool
operating and welding, heavy
truck chassis and suspension,
and automotive air condition
ing. Although he thoroughly
enjoys his work, it is obvious
that Mr. Hash’s greatest joy is
his family, consisting of an
outstanding number of
teachers. Besides his own
teaching ability, his wife,
Evelyn, is the principal at
Piney Creek Elementary
School; his oldest daughter,

examinations for night and off-campus classes are to be
scheduled for the last class meeting of the quarter. Winter
Quarter ends at 5:00 p.m., February 25, 1983.
Final examinations are to meet in the same rooms as
regular scheduled classes. Classes scheduled at odd hours
(example 8:30 M & F) will meet during the time scheduled
for 8:00 MWF classes.
On Tuesday, February 22, 1983, a reading day is
scheduled for students and a work day for faculty and staff.

Erora, age 23, is an instructor
at a middle-grade school in
Virginia; and her younger
sister, Evelyn, age 21, is
presently concluding her
student teaching at Jefferson
Elementary School after
which she will receive a
teacher’s certificate from
Appalachian State Univer
sity. Besides these 2 intelligent
young women, Mr. and Mrs.
Hash have 3 other children:
Sarah, age 18, who is presently
concluding her second year at
Appalachian State Univer
sity; Billy, age 15, who attends
Alleghany High School; and
Jimmy, age 12, who is a
student at Piney Creek
Elementary School. Other
than his family and his work,
Mr. Hash enjoys collecting
and restoring old farm and
industrial equipment, and he
and his wife belong to Shiloh
Methodist Church in Allegha
ny County.
