Financial
Aid News
Financial aid applications are still
being taken for the 1983-84 academic
year. These funds are intended to
assist students with tuition, fees,
books, supplies, room, board,
transportation, child care, and
personal expenses. Students demon
strating sufficient need may receive
assistance from one or more funding
sources. It is possible for students just
completing the application process to
be reimbursed for part or all of their
Fall Quarter expenses through the Pell
Grant Program.
Students meeting the eligibility
requirements for Pell Grants or North
Carolina Insured Student Loans
(NCISL) will find funds still available
to assist them with educational
expenses. At present, all Supplemental
Grant, College Work-Study and
scholarship funds have been awarded.
However, students are encouraged to
apply for these programs just in case
funds become available later this year.
Over 80% of our students
completing the application process
this year have been approved for Pell
Grants. Many students that might be
eligible for aid never apply. They
assume that they would not be eligible.
For example, having an off campus
job or receiving VA Benefits does not
automatically make a student ineli
gible.
If you could use a little help with
your expenses contact the Student
Services Office for more information.
You might be glad you did.

Message
Dr. David Daniel
Wilkes Community College has
moved to Sparta.
No, we’re not leaving our
Wilkesboro campus. But we’ve just
opened a new facility in Alleghany
County which marks the beginning of
expanded operations there.
The WCC Alleghany Center is
located on Main Street, Sparta. It
houses three classrooms, multi-pur
pose teaching space, offices and a
student lounge. We’re proud of it, and
I think our friends in Alleghany will
be, too.
The Center officially opened
October 17 with a ribbon cutting and
open house. The first classes will be
held there winter quarter and we
already have over 35 scheduled. But
these are just the beginning. We plan
to expjmd our offerings as needs of the
area are further identified.
All the proper training equipment
will be available at the Alleghany
Center, including computers. The
faculty will be the most capable
instructors we can find. The staff will
be trained to provide all the support
services available at the main campus.
The college is hopeful of establish
ing a center of equal quality in Ashe
County soon. We already offer an
extensive list of courses there, but a
facility of our own would allow us
greater flexibility in meeting local
training needs.
The development of educational
opportunities in a student’s own
community is a priority at Wilkes
Community College. We are commit
ted to making our services available to
all who want and need them, no
matter where they live in Wilkes,
Ashe, or Alleghany.

The Fall Quarter will end in a few
weeks. Preparation is underway for
the Winter Quarter. Pre-registration
will begin on November 7, 1983, on
campus and on pre-announced dates
in Alleghany and Ashe counties. The
Winter schedule will accommodate the
needs of our students throughout the
service area by offering a wide range
of courses over a broad time frame,
including evenings and Saturdays.
We are pleased to begin scheduling
classes in the Wilkes Community
College Alleghany Center. The new
Center is on Main Street in Sparta and
will be used to bring a variety of
programs and individual courses to
the people of Alleghany County.
During the Fall Quarter, the College
restructured the Career Center located
in.Lovette Hall. The Career Center
now houses Cooperative Skills
Training, Cooperative Education,
Human Resource Development, and
the Jobs Training Partnership Act
(JTPA Program). We believe the
resources in skill and talent located in
the Career Center provides students
with the greatest opportunity possible
to have their job needs met.

exciting things planned. Our two main

week-long Winter Festival in January,
ending with a major dance and Queen

As plans are made we actively seek
input from our student body. Your
activity fees sponsor these events.
Please take time to contact your SGA
representatives in person, or drop
suggestions into the Suggestion Box in
the Student Commons. Follow up by
active participation in our activities.
