THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUME 14 - NO. 4 WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA FEBRUARY 14, 1985 Happy Valentine’ Day” Ah, Love, ’Tis Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 Dr. David E. Daniel From The President Winter quarter has finally brought winter weather, and as we plow through the freezing cold of February, the college faculty and staff are preparing for the arrival of spring quarter in March. The new quarter is carrying the theme, “Reaching New Heights,” and the college and its students are doing just that. Recently, 14 WCC students were selected for the 1984-85 Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior and Community Colleges. We salute those deserving students who have displayed the outstanding qualities and academic achievements required for this level of distinction. Congratulations to Daniel R. Beshears, Pamela A. Darnell, Keith A. Mastin, Bryce F. Shew, Joy P. Lanningham, Sherry L. Miller, Donald W. Gilliam, Pamela G. Vannoy, Robert L. Handy, Keith K. Roten, William K. Adolph, Maria G. Deighton and D. Keith Miller. Our spring theme also depicts the college’s newest facility, which opened in November. The North Wilkesboro Center on Tenth Street has enabled the college to expand its services in that area of the community with such programs as continuing education, adult high school and adult basic education. While new non-credit classes are being scheduled on a steady basis, a special credit course will be offered for the first time spring quarter. English composition will be the “lunch break” special, offered three days a week. Now that it can offer a wide range of classes and programs, the North Wilkesboro Center is another example of Wilkes Community College reaching new heights. “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” And Elizabeth Barette Browning counted those ways beautifully, poetically for her Robert. Zelda Fitzgerald described her love for F. Scott this way: “I look down the tracks and see you . . . hurrying to me. Without you, dearest, I couldn’t see or hear or feel or think - or live.” Flaubert presented love this way: “This is the hour when, alone amidst everything that sleeps, 1 open the drawer that holds my treasures. I look at your slippers, your handkerchief . . . your portrait. I reread your letters . . . my heart expands in the night, suffused with a dew of love.” Finally, some very sophomoric Romeo with pencil in hand sent this to his love: “1 thing if you every day - you are always on my mine.” With Valentine’s Day just a few breaths and a kiss or two away, one must be careful not to be a sophomoric Romeo. And though most Romeos (Juliets, too) are not poets, the words of love and caring and concern can be expressed in many ways . . . Give flowers, even a single rose speaks volumes. . . Send a Valentine’s Day card ... Help with his or her yucky chores . . . Take your love out to dinner, maybe even dancing... Phone that certain someone unexpectedly and speak those most beautiful words in the world: / love you . . . Yes, Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, is a good excuse to make living even more wonderful.
