Page Two - Cougar Cry - February 13,1991 Where's The Fire? Wirk hard, but take it easy. At first glance, the first phrase seems to contradict the second. But on fijrther reflection, one sees that the phrases need not be in opposition. We all know people work hard and they look like they are working hard. They walk briskly, nervously; they ap pear to be doing two things at once with hyperactive speed; they hardly have time fora friendly greeting. Such peo ple live under a storm of tense busyness produced by a mountain of individual problems and concerns. Conversely other people we know work equally hard, but they appear to becalm, relaxed, unhurried. Though they carry similar burdens and have the same number of problems and worries and responsibilities, they still perform as well or better than their straining-at- the-leash conterparts. One group is a slave to each day’s performance; the other, its master. A\fe’ve all observed these two general types and we can probably categorize ourselves. But how does one transfer from that slave to master group? It ain’t easy. Common sense dictates that proper diet, enough rest, and sufficient exer cise help. Add to these a mental attitude that demands a cool, intelligent, thoughtfiil reaction to a problem rather than hyperactivity and mental strain, and it must follow that better work must result without working oneself to death. Think! Will you dash off as if you were going to a fire or can you keep your cool? Where do you fit in? For the one who’s never tried to ridicule, to break my pride. Who does not act a macho man With rough control or heavy hand. For the man whose sensitivity holds such power over me— Take my mind, take my soul. Take my heart - it’s yours - to control. And, “Master "I will gladly say to you. Because you would not force me to. — Nancy Sizemore PTK- ‘‘Santa's Helpers'' Congratulations to Martha Cuthbertson, from Student Develop ment! Martha won the drawing for “Half the Pot” sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa. The drawing was held on Derember 19th, 1990. The “pot” total ed $350. Martha’s share of that was $160.00. That was good returns for her $1.00 investment. Martha informed us that the winnings would go for a wor thy cause, because she was going to use it to assist a needy family at Christmas. The other half of the “pot” also went to a vrorthy cause. Phi Theta Kappa sold the tickets in order to raise money for various service projects. One such project was to provide stockings and gifts for children at the Wilkes Child Development Center at Christmas. After filling the stockings with candy and gifts, several members of Phi Theta Kappa accompanied Santa Claus to the Center to deliver the gifts to the children. Approximately 60 children ranging in age from 2 to 5 were excited and thrilled with the entire event. However, it was difficult to tell who was having the most fiin—the small children, or the members of Phi Theta Kappa who delivered the gifts. They were all glad to be a part of this happy time for these loving children. The Camera Club Randall York helps Santa deliver gifts to the eager children at the Wilkes Child Development Center. Radio, Television Broadcasting The students in the Radio and Televi sion program are no different than the ones in the past. They are ambitious young people who have the desire to create some serious waves. The students in RTV this year are creating some state of the art waves. WSIF received two Denon C.D. players, and two Technics turntables. With this new equipment WSIF is totally a station that is making serious waves. In the R.T.V. program, part of the curriculum in the fell quarter is to travel to local Radio stations. During these travels the true Dr. A1 Stanly came out of the closet. We now know Dr. A1 Stanley wants to drive for Nascar; Dr. “Richard Petty” Stanley. On our first trip out to T^lorsville we were follow ing Dr. Stanley and we could not keep up. Dr. was putting the metal to the pedal. It was an unique experience to say the least. Dr. Stanley the fastest driver in Radio Broadcasting. — Barry Owenby The Camera Club started out slow ly this year but built up stamina. With care and participation. Advisor, Larry Caudill, experimented with various times to see which would suit the in terested members. He settled on 1:00, and decided to meet every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month. Each meeting the club decided on the type of shots they wished to experi ment taking and then viewed the results at the next meeting. The club learned from these excursions how to use various techniques, light sources, angles, and varying subject matter. Slide film was the favorite to shoot because it could be blown up on a screen for easy viewing. The Club learned how to critique these shots, and tried to visualize a way to improve them. Future fundraising plans were to have a photo contest and to advertise favorite pictures to sell to finance our intended fieldtrips. The camera club consisted of Larry Caudill, Advisor, John Wiles, Dian Marcum, Kaye Benton, Phyllis Smith, and Sherry Miller (not pictured). However, we certainly welcome anyone who would like to take a shot! Biology Instructor A very warm welcome is extended to our new biology and chemistry in structor. Dr. Harriet Strickland! She received her B.S. in Biology from George Mason University and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ohio State University. Before coming here, she was doing research at Wake Forest University and teaching part- time. Her love for teaching won out, bringing her to our campus. The lighter side of Dr. Strickland reveals that she is a “junk food’ addict with “Zingers” topping the list. Among her hobbies she lists reading, needlepoint, and ice skating. When asked about some of her favorite things, she replied, “cuts, fall, Christmas, and historic travel.” Before closing our interview. Dr. Strickland expressed a fervent desire that her students leave with a working knowledge of the sciences, which, in turn, she hopes will enrich their daily lives through application. Again welcome. Dr. Harriet Strickland!! — Dena Gillette Camera Club It Goes Up and Around Like to go up and around on a Ferris wheel? Then February 14 is a day of celebration for you, for on this day in 1859, George Washington Gale Ferris was born. He became an inventor and civil engineer, and he invented (what else?) the Ferris wheel. It was developed for the World’s Columbian Exposition 250 feet across and had 36 coaches suspended from it, each coach capable of carrying 40 passengers. Needless to say, the Ferris wheel was one of the fair’s most popular attractions. Radio Club The Radio Club this year consists of Tommy Pollard as President, Gary McLellan as Vice President, Donna Blevins as Secretary, Ellen Stevenson as Treasurer and Kelly Hart as Promo tions Director. The Radio Club was started last year. Its purpose is to promote the Radio Sta tion WSIF and the radio program around the campus. The Radio Club is also functional in raising money for the College radio station to buy C. D.s and records.
