jxWUN/j^ THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUME 21. NUMBER 6 WILKESBORO. NORTH CAROLINA MAY 15, 1991 ”Twenty-Fifth Commencement” 1991 Graduates Dr, Jim Randolph, President Bits and Pieces In a few days, the 1990-91 school year will be history. Many of you (about 250, I’m told) will soon walk across the stage of the John A. Walker Commun ity Center and pick up a two-year degree or one-year diploma. Congratulations to each and every one of you on a job well done. In getting ready for graduation, I find myself sitting back and reflecting upon the many things that took place during the year. It’s been a good year at WCC. A lot of learning has taken place and we have all had a good time. Hats Off to Ritchie I have truly enjoyed working with SGA president, Ritchie Greer. Ritchie is a mover and shaker. 1 will never forget his successful efforts in organizing the "Support Our Troops” rally and parade. It was a great opportunity for all the people of Wilkes County to show sup port and concern for the men and women who were serving their country in the Persian Gulf. 1 can also tell you that Ritchie has served the students well as a member of the college’s Board of Trustees. He kept the trustees informed about student activities and he expressed your views on important policies. To me, he has been a good friend and valuable co worker. Michael Lyles How many of us will ever get his/her name in USA TODAY? WCC’s own Michael Lyles has done this by being selected as a member of the two-year college Academic All-American team. Michael was one of two community col lege students from North Carolina to be selected to this highly sought after honor. On campus, Michael is president of Phi Theta Kappa and involved in many activities. Best wishes to Michael as he continues his education. Athletic Teams It was a good year for our wresthng team. The team won the regional tour nament and ended the season nationally ranked. A big thanks to Coach Norman and the entire team. The men’s softball team won a tour nament in Burlington, while the women’s team won second place. Good job ya’ll. Special Events The David Reynold’s directed play, "Camino Real,” was an excellent way to end the year. The cast and crew did a great job putting together this unusual Tennessee Williams play. Many of us also enjoyed the four one- act, student directed plays performed in February. The excellent meal was pre pared and served by the students in the Hotel-Restaurant Management Program. If you missed this one, you missed a real treat. Graduation Day Here are ten things that can and usu ally do happen on graduation day. 10. It rains. 9. It rains all night and floods. 8. The air conditioning unit in the Walker Center goes out. 7. There are twice as many people as seats. 6. Your father didn’t forget his camcorder. 5. You trip on the top step and stumble across the stage. 4. The guy next to you forgot to use deodorant. 3. The guy next to you never uses deodorant. 2. Your mother yells "We love you!” as you cross the stage. I. Your father yells "It’s about time!” as you cross the stage. The President, Faculty and Graduating Class of Wilkes Community College request the honor of your presence at the Commencement Exercises Friday afternoon, May twenty'fourth five o'clock John A. The programs and the graduates of the different areas are: From The Ashe Campus With summer fast approaching, many new and exciting things are happening at the Ashe Campus of Wilkes Commun ity College. On May 2, a very successful career day was held. Many high school stu dents attended the festivities. There was a great deal of interest in the technical and vocational area. Instructor Eddie Lyle, Tony Miller, Eddie Carter, and other students had set up many elec tronic displays such as programmable controllers, programmable controllers combined with laser lights, frequency measuring devices, how to combine a group of electronic components, air condition demonstration, heat pump demonstration, air and hydrolic pneu matic, and motor control current. Many thanks to Mr. Lyle and students for their hard work during the open house. Where is your coat and tie? This question was asked of Darrell Miller, the Ashe Campus Director. With saw dust, and red stain on his clothes from sawing out and painting letters, it was a legitimate question. The combined ef forts of Darrell, Eddie, Bruce, Tony and students have brought results. The Ashe Campus is now proudly displaying a new 15 foot wood sign. The sign is a first for the Ashe Campus. This sign should be a great help to people trying to locate the Ashe Campus. With all the hard work at the Ashe Campus, a little fun had to be included. Bob Calhoun brought his high school Research and Design class to the Ashe Campus. Not with books in hand but with race cars in hand! Yes, in order to find a 65 foot smooth track, the hall of the Ashe Campus converted to a drag strip. This racing was conducted with the winner of the intense competition going to the state and possibly national races.
