The Game of Golf
A few weeks ago I got up early in
the morning, drove about 30 miles,
paid $30.00 and walked out on the
first tee of a very nice golf course. My
tee shot was low, straight and long. In
fact, too long. It hit in the middle of
the fairway, rolled through the fair
way, through the light rough and
made a beautiful splash in the middle
of a creek.
My second shot, third stroke be
cause of the penalty, was a beaut. It
hit on the edge of the green, took a
backward bounce, rolled off the
green and into a chest-high sand trap.
I was off to a great start. "Does it get
any better than this?” I asked. Yes, it
started to rain and it rained for the
next ten holes.
By the time 1 got to the eighteenth
green, my score was just slightly less
than the national deficit. I was wet,
tired, humiliated, and disgusted.
Why do I do this to myself? Why
don’t I just admit that I can’t play

Attorney W.H. McElwee
The students, faculty, and staff •
welcomes W.H. "Billy” McElwee to
the Wilkes Community College Board
of Trustees. Mr. McElwee was ap
pointed to the Board by Governor
Martin on November 19, 1991, to
fill the unexpired term of Edwin H.
McGee. Mr. McElwee is an attorney
with the law firm of McElwee,
McElwee, and Warden. He was re
cently appointed to serve as the
Town Attorney for North Wilkes-
boro. The college feels most fortunate
to have someone of Mr. McElwee’s
caliber join their Board.
Yearbook sections will be as-
signed and posted as soon as all
questionnaires are returned to
room 405. Anyone who hasn’t al
ready done so needs to drop by room
405 and pick up a hand-out for
yearbook/journalism and fill out a
