The Male Species
In an earlier article, 1 discussed the
wonder of the TV remote control unit
and how it has affected the male spe
cies. I noted that it has revolutionized
TV watchirtg for men, taking it from a
boring one channel experience to an
exciting 10 to 20 channel viewing
extravaganza. Enjoying 20 TV pro
grams at the same time is something
that every male can do with great ease
and delight. Females, on the other
hand, and unfortunately for them,
seem to enjoy viewing only one show
at a time.
Along this line, I have observed that
there are a number of instincts that are
unique to men. For example, did you
know that men never have to ask
directions. We always know where we
are. A few years ago, my wife and I
were driving in southern Utah — a
very desolate place — and were,
according to her, lost. All of a sudden,
we happened upon a sheepherder.
"Stop,” she yelled, "Let’s ask this guy
the way back to a paved road.”
"No,” I said patiently, "I’m sure the
paved road is right over the next hill.”

Graduation
As the trees begin to bud and the
flowers begin to bloom, one doesn’t
have to look far before he can see the
spring is in the air. Spring is also the
time for new beginnings of another
sort, that is, the beginning of a new life
for WCC graduates.
The 1992 WCC Commencement
Ceremony will be held Friday, May 22
at the John A. Walker Community
Center. Two hundred and eighty-two
degrees and diplomas will be awarded
on this occasion.
The program, which begins at 5:00
p.m., will open with a prelude from
Mr. J. Jay Anderson. This will be fol
lowed by the Processional "Trumpet
Tune and Voluntory.” Mrs. Debo
Lawrence Cornett will follow with the
singing of the National Anthem. A
Prayer of Invocation will be rendered
by the Reverend Dr. Robert C. Evans
III, who serves as a minister at the
North Wilkesboro Presyterian
Church.

May May Make Ye Merry
The month of May is believed
named for Maia, the Roman goddes
of spring and growth.
Many authorities, however, believe
that May comes from the Latin word
majores, which means older men. It
was a sacred month to the eldsters.
And the month sacred to young men
or juniores followed, of course, with
June.
But no matter whether the month’s
name uios derived from Maia or from
majores. May is the time for green
grass and blooming flowers. May
poles and May baskets.
It’s a good time!
