THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE
VOLUME 23. NUMBER 6
WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA
MAY 12, 1993
Convention
Fever
On Friday, April 2, 1993 four stu
dents from WCC travelled to Char
lotte so they could attend a North
Carolina Comprehensive Community
College Student Government Associ
ation (N4CSGA) conference. Con
ferences of the N4CSGA are open to
any SG A member or SGA advisor of a
North Carolina community college
who will register. Registering students
were Terry Felts, Scarlett Overbay,
Joe Correll, and "Woody” Wood-
side; their advisor, Kathron Richards
also registered.
Several key issues were discussed in
committee meetings on Friday and
Saturday. Among these issues were
on-campus childcare facilities, scho
larships and grants to investigate, spe
cial population facilities, and faculty-
student communications. Seminars
were offered on how to succeed in
business, drug awareness, self-defense,
and stress management.
Elections were held for the coming
year’s N4CSGA officers. Scarlett
Overbay was very interested in meet
ing the candidates. Several offices did
not have any candidate, but whether
opposed or not there was much cam
paigning by those that did want to be
elected.
All was not business, just ask one of
these five about "flying united,” or
body building competition, or getting
lost in Charlotte. There were dances
on Friday and Saturday nights. On
Friday, an attempt was made by one of
the students to join in a local high
school prom (boy! was I embarrass
ed!). Several other conventions were
in progress, and the opportunities to
expand horizons were plentiful. If
another convention becomes availa
ble, count on my attendance.

The Miracle
Fifteen years ago a popular song
really spoke to my heart. "Miracles”
may have been written for me. I can
remember one line saying, "If you
could believe in miracles, so could I.” I
can remember hearing that was "only a
fantasy; only fools believe in miracles."
Call me a fool; I’ve seen miracles.
I’ve seen a dead man speaking to forty
thousand people; they understood his
message. I have seen four thousand
hungry souls fed from a single vessel;
they will always be able to taste that

Best Of Show
Shirlene Dillard
Shirlene Dillard, a Food Service
Management student at Wilkes Com
munity College, won the John Sector
Award for the Most Artistic Display
in the 1993 Culinary Salon sponsored
by Professional Chefs of North Caro
lina and the North Carolina Restau
rant Associations at their annual
show. The show was held last week at
the Charlotte Merchandise Mart in
Charlotte, NC. Ms. Dillard’s entry
earned a gold medal in the student
pastry category as well.
The entry, themed "Circus, Cir
cus,” is an array of circus clowns and
animals made of Marripan, a pastry
made of almond paste and powdered
sugar. Food coloring is used to color
the pastry mixture, which, according
to Ms. Dillard, is a sort of "grown-up
Play Dough” and then is modeled into
shapes. Ms. Dillard’s shapes consist of
circus clowns, dogs jumping through
hoops, elephants balancing balls, seals
spinning balls on their noses. Each
group of figures, approximately 2" in
height, are posed atop mirrors to
show off the minute details.
Also included in the display is a
Chocolate Mousse Train. The tiny
