THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE
VOLUME 24. NUMBER 1
WILKESBORO. NORTH CAROLINA
AUGUST 30. 1993
New "Welcome To WCC”
On behalf of Wilkes Community
College, I welcome our new students.
I welcome you to innovation, where
learning can be gratifying. I welcome
you to friendship, where students are
more than just seats filled. 1 welcome
you to experience, where life gains
new meanings. I welcome you to
opportunity, where doors open. I
welcome you to changes, growth, and
enlightenment. I welcome you to
academia.
Every new student evaluates de
mands of higher education. Some find
these to be overwhelming. Learning is
the student’s burden, and self-disci-
pline isn’t easy to develop. Substantial
amounts of study time take their toll
on social life. Costs of education
define a different level of living. Sche
dules and deadlines discourage many
potential graduates. Be encouraged to
endure and excel! Adversity has often
been the mold of greatness.
Freshmen have diverse backgrounds.
Some have only high school expe
rience. Others have many years of
work experiences. They are men and
women and single ■■ .d married. Some
communicate in Spanish, or Japanese,
or even AmSLan. You will find stu
dents both similar and different. Look
beyond your similarities and learn
from one another. Reach across your
differences and befriend one another.
You have tremendous human resour
ces to broaden your horizon.
A great wealth avails itself for your
education. Very learned instructors
serve as your mentors. Many volumes
of written material are at your dispo
sal. Audio-visual facilities are ready
for your inquiries. Special events and
guest speakers frequently intensify
understanding. The list could be re
cited for hours, but you surely under
stand — we’re glad you’re here!

Today’s world of work is in a constant state of change. Every new year we see
advances in technology, science and business. To keep abreast of these, you will
need help.
Here at Wilkes Community College, we are fortunate to have over 60 full
time and over 200 part-time instructors, each highly qualified, dedicated, and
willing to go that extra mile to prepare our students for the world of work.
You’ll learn about the world of work right here at Wilkes Community College
from those that care about your future.
Schoolin’
Summer — that time of year when
students take a break from the rigors
of academic studies. A time of hot,
humid nights spent socializing with
friends or working to save up for the
coming school year. A time when
most students relax and recuperate.
For the student-athlete summer
means practice, repetition, and prepa
ration. The students of Wilkes Com
munity College are no different. This
summer brings a new era to WCC
sports. The upcoming academic cal
endar brings with it a new athletic
schedule. This year will be the inaugu
ral year of the women’s basketball
program, as well as co-ed volleyball.
Jim Jones, acting athletic director
and men’s basketball coach, has been
busy this summer, too. Not only does
he have the job of getting his team
ready, but also setting up the sche
dules for all of the sports programs,
including tennis.
As the summer draws to an end and
the fall quarter begins, all students
should be planning to take an active
interest in the sports programs this
year. Hope to see you out there!
