THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUME 24, NUMBER 7 WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA MAY 18, 1994 ft Congratulations to the 1994 Graduates^^ Wilkes SGA Delegates at Spring Conference Dawn on the 29th of April found ten WCC students (and their advisor) traveling to New Bern. Their desti nation was the N4CSG A Spring confer ence (North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association). This was no ordinary conference; this was Spring Splash ’94 ~ the last collective meeting for com munity college SGA’s across North Carolina during this academic year. Although tired, our contingent was happy and wanted to make a dif ference at Spring Splash '94. During the first leg of journey the ten student voices rang with enthusiasm: "ZZZZzz....” About 7:30 a.m., Kathron Richards Woodside arrived in Greensboro for breakfast and students took advantage of a much needed pit stop. Apparently Greensboro does not come to life that early in the morning in the UNC-G area. Only a coffee shop was open to serve our bleary-eyed group. It was just as well; Kathron was hell-bent to get in motion again after only enough time to order coffee and danishes. "Wait Kathron; we should pay for these before we go!” The journey was a very productive time. Scarlett Overbay and Julie Mincey compiled a marvelous scrap book which Soctt Horton, Cody Hemrick and Michelle brown con stantly critiqued. Jeff Nichols, and Rick McVicker studied the lyrics to several musical works. Leanne Foster and Shawn Horton recharged with sleep while Kathron drove relentlessly toward New Bern. I was the back seat driver, "Let’s stop there. The sign says we can shower with twenty gallons of diesel fuel!” We arrived safely in New Bern where lunch was waiting but still warm. Don Whitten, who came the =>t )(= day before, met us and frantically directed us to do a gadzillion things which we must have done; suddenly we possessed room keys and Spring Splash ’94 grab bags full of pens, pencils, note pads, and an assortment of swell candies. Quickly, the girls dashed off to their room and changed (three times) for lunch. The stage was set; the convention began. It was a whirlwind of events and time became our enemy. Workshops were provided through out the convention for edification of the attendees. Some learned how to interview for jobs; some learned what student activities are most successful. I attended a workshop on motivation which was very useful. Another work shop was presented by Kathron that dealt with communication; I really enjoyed that one ~ I co-presented it. In the end, all of the workshops were well attended, and each one provided useful insights. An hour seemed to short when the presentations were so interesting. "Did anyone take notes at the 'How to get chosen for N4CSGA conventions’ workshop?” Two evening affairs were provided to allow delegates to socialize. Surely, you don’t expect everything to be business! The music was loud; the lighting caused equilibrium problems, and the spirit was contagious. There were contests to determine spirit. There were limbo and hula-hoop contests (Scon Horton came in 3rd place in the limbo contest ~ Yay Scott!). There were chants and choreo- of scrapbooks (yes, we entered), table tents, and newspapers. "Next year, should we put the scrapbook on top of a table?” Attendance was required at several activities. One such activity was cul- Ccontinued on page two) ^ke^0^KeAident, ^aJCMJI^cu^d^mcll(u^inJ^^laA^^ of ^dkeA/^ommMnU^^oJIe^ tk& konoj('0^^xxuto^iHeAence/ allke^ ^ommencemerd^ocemAeA^ aPiejQtaorv, oy’clock —- 1C It 1994 Graduates The twenty-eighth annual commencement exercises will take place Friday, May 27, in the John A.
