Thank you Editor-in-Chief Brian Elledge January Birthdays January is the first month of the Gregorian calendar which our mod ern calendar is based. The most famous event in January is New Year’s Day, but there are also many birth days in the month as well. The most famousjanuary birthday is that of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 17th. Listed below is some other famous (and not so famous) birthdays in January. 9 - This day would have marked Richard Nixon’s 82nd birthday. 10 - Rock singer. Rod Stewart, turns 50 today. 17 - The man who wanted the tur key to be the USA’s national bird (Benjamin Franklin), celebrates his 289th birthday anniversary today. 20 - Like the Energizer Rabbit, George Burns keeps going and going, and clebrates his 99th birthday today. 26 - Hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, turns 34 this month. 27 - Today marks the anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 239th birthday. "Faculty members...shall be assigned no more than 25 hours per week of a combination of contact and office hours.” The 25 hours only cov ers two of the five faculty respon sibilities. I for one find it terribly difficult to accomplish all of the nec essary "instructional related work (lecture and lab preparation, test writing, paper grading, etc.), pro fessional development, and college and community service” that is ex pected, in the remaining 15 hours of a 40-hour workweek. We indicate in the Student Handbook that a student, in order to be successful, needs to spend 2 hours outside of class for every hour spent in class. A teacher spends more than 2 hours outside of class for every hour spent in class... 18 to 24 contact hours, 36 to 48 hours in instructional preparation, for a total of 54 to 72 hours per week. Not bad for a teacher who only has to work 25 hours a week. My personal schedule for the fall quarter had 28 contact hours, 8 different lecture and lab preparations, 2 of which I had never taught before and 2 others with new books, all of which required new lecture prepar ation, new tests, etc. My Monday went from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 12 hours with 8 of them in class. My Tuesday went from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., 13 hours with 7'/i of them in class. 1 had 3 sections of a course, with 16 students in each one. Those 48 students each handed in 10 one page assignments and a 5 page research paper; that’s 720 pages of reading just for those three classes. And I was, "only required to work 25 hours out of a normal work week” to accomplish all of this. I did the very best job I could...was 1 pleased with what I accomplished ...not at all! But like most of the faculty, I did what I had to do. This is just an example of what most of the faculty had to do. The journalism staff is working diligently to com plete the 1995 yearbook. Students who would like to assist the staff in completing the yearbook should come to room 405 Hayes Hall in the afternoons. If you haven’t placed an order for your yearbook, you need to do so this week. W '» I Ye Host Happenings Hello Wilkes Community College. We are the Ye Host Club.
