NSF Grant Links
Wilkes College to Internet
Research Triangle Park, N.C. - The National Science Foundation (NSF) has
awarded MCNC a two-year, $284,000 grant to connect Wilkes College and an
additional nine North Caroina colleges to Internet, the global communications
network. These connections will provide the campuses with a wealth of informa
tion and resources far beyond the capability of any single campus by providing
access to databases, libraries and other researchers located virtually around the
world.
The NSF grant will fund equipment and support for links over leased phone
lines from MCNC's Information Technologies Division to the following North
Carolina campuses:
Barber-Scotia College, Concord; Haywood Community College, Clyde; Living
stone College, Salisbury; Methodist College, Fayetteville; Montreat-Anderson
College, Montreat; NC Wesleyan College, Rocky Mount; Peace College,
Raleigh; St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Laurinburg; Wilkes Community
College, Wilkesboro; Wingate College, Wingate.
Alan Blatecky, MCNC vice president for information technologies says,
"Internet connections play an increasingly important role on campuses today.
They provide faculty and students access to a myriad of resources found in
libraries and databases, and enable collaboration with contemporaries world
wide. The Internet connections truly remove geographic barriers to communi
cation."
A total of 53 post secondary institutions now are connected to the MCNC
North Carolina Research and Education (NC-REN) data network. During the
two-year program, MCNC staff will provide Internet connections, training,
support and technical assistance in bringing the new campuses online.
Background: MCNC is a private, nonprofit corporation located in Research
Triangle Park, N.C. MCNC provides advanced technical resources in microelec
tronics, communications and computing to support research, education and
industry and to enhance technology-based economic development in North
Carolina.
MCNC manages the North Carolina Research and Education Network (NC-
REN). The NC-REN data network provides data connections for thousands of
computers at colleges and universities across the state. The NC-REN interactive
audio/video network currently links 10 universities and four medical schools
over a microwave network for teleclasses and video conferences.
