The Cougars of Wilkes Com
munity College posted their first win
of the season Tuesday against Cald
well Community College. Strong ser
ving and intense spiking led the team
to victory in the lopsided contest 15-
3,16-14,15-0. Game co-captain Rich
ard Fink finished the match with
seven straight aces.
Game one began as the Cougars
went on a 13-2 run. Multiple service
points were posted by Fink, game co
captain April Edwards, and Travis
Anderson. "The whole team really
showed enthusiasm from the start,”
said Coach Smith. "Players were will
ing to do what it took to get the job
done. 1 think the support from a large
group of family and friends in the
stands had a lot to do with it.” Game
two proved to be a different story.
Caldwell quickly served their way
to a 14-7 lead. Led by ferocious
spiking by Charlie Huffman, the Cou
gars mounted a comeback. Anderson
and Scott Farrington joined in with a
shower of kills coupled by Shanda
Handy’s serving and Jennifer Town-
sell’s setting. "I was really proud of
the team at this point. Every player
showed poise, heart, and courage to
come back after being down.”
The final game of the match ex
posed the powerful serving of Fink.
Siding out after five points, the
rotation brought Fink around for
seven service aces to polish off the
game.
The season continues Thursday at
Surry and will hold four more home
games.
Student Government Association
elections were held on Tuesday, Septem
ber 19 and Wednesday, September
20. This election seemed to be an
enjoyable occasion for those in
volved. "Ballot Bailiffs” from the Stu
dent Government Association had the
privilege of meeting student voters,
and the voters received ice-cream in
return for votes. A bit of giddiness
was evident during the proceedings,
and SGA officials were in a jocular
mood.
While having fun, SGA officers
also remembered their responsi
bilities. Lists of freshman and sopho
more voters were kept close at hand to
prevent unfair voting, and all officials
kept one eye on the ballot box. When
the election closed at 1:30 on Wednes
day afternoon, the results were tallied
as follows:
SGA Executive Council: President,
Michael Woodruff; Secretary, Step
hanie Simpson; Treasurer, Angela Hol
brook; PIO, Theresa Foster; and Parlia
mentarian, Scotty Scripter.
Sophomore Class Officers: Presi
dent, Abigail Harris; Vice President,
Travis Anderson; Secretary, Charlie
Huffman; Senators, Scott Farrington,
David McMillian, R.J. Braemer, and

Freshman Class Officers: President,
Jeremiah Dice; Vice President, Con
nie Ireland; Treasurer, Eva Lankford;

ation officers!
