3 SEPTEMBER 1996 THE COUGAR CRY PAGE 2 President's Welcome cont'd... in attaining your educational goals. There are some changes un derway on our campus; the most ob vious of which is the construction of our new Learning Resources and Stu dent Center. We apologize for the resulting inconveniences in parking and ask for your cooperation. Another less obvious but also important change underway is that of the reengineering of all of our curricula and the preparation for converting to the semester system by the Fall of‘97. Beginning Fall 1997, you will also find it easier to transfer credits be tween community colleges and uni versities as a result of a statewide Comprehensive Transfer Agreement currently being written. We believe that these changes will ultimately ben efit you, the student, and rest assured that any changes will not jeopardize your previous course work. We at WCC pledge our every effort to help make the transition as smooth as pos sible. Again, I welcome you. It is great to have you here at WCC and best wishes for a great year! Gordon Bums PARKING CONTINUED... for its students. Some colleges don’t have near enough parking to accom modate their students. Sometimes freshmen and sophomores aren’t al lowed to park on campus at all be cause of the lack of parking spaces. Their parking fees are an outrageous amount of money, and you still have to walk a mile to class. Wilkes Com munity College will have enough parking for the students this year, but you may have to walk a good bit if you don’t get here early. Additional parking will be available to the students of WCC this year. Security will be directing traf fic the first few days of classes so you will be able to find out where you can and should park. Additional parking areas will be the two gravel lots between the Walker Center building and the Beacon building, the graveled spot from the caboose to the Watson Cabin, and the marked park ing spaces in front of the Power Me- chanics building. Don’t be too stressed out over this; a new parking lot will be ready before the building is finished. This lot will allow park ing for faculty and staff, so that we will have more parking spaces freed up for the students’ use. Security would advise all stu dents to have proper parking stickers. These stickers, purchased during reg istration, should be displayed on the rear driver's side of your vehicle. Without the stickers, students will get tickets. If your vehicle happens to be in the shop, and you have to drive your parent's car, PLEASE DON’T PARK IN THE VISITORS' PARKING! This will cost you a $7 fine. In this case, place a note in the window of the car with your parking sticker number and the reason you’re not displaying a sticker. This will save you a lot of hassle. Also, security advises all stu dents to observe the 15 mph speed limit while on campus. People, this is a must. Pedestrians will be cross ing the streets more than ever, so be careful. Finally, please do not park on curbs or streets. You wouldn’t want your vehicle sideswiped, would you? If we would please be patient with this parking situation, we will all be less stressed about it. Please carpool when you can, and when you can’t, park and stay there. Walking is very good for you!
