THE COUGAR CRY 3 SEPTEMBER 1996 PAGE 9 Books. Books, and Now, Even More Books “The present Learning Resource Center was designed for a student population of less than 1,000. Today, nearly 2,000 are enrolled. The Cen ter was designed to hold 25,000 books. Today over 50,000 books are on the overcrowded bookshelves,” says Fay Byrd, Director of LearniNg Resources. The Learning Resource/Student Center will house an up-to-date and state-of-the-art Library and Media Production Center for the present and the future. The Library will be an in formation center in which one can use the Internet, Family Search, First Search, and data bases to gain imme diate access to the past, present, and anticipated future. The additional space will provide more storage space for our own local history and a grow ing collection of genealogy resources. Technology will allow users to dial into our own information data bases. This facility was made possible by North Carolina legislative action and the people of the state who voted for the bond, Nov. 2, 1993. Mr. George Holmes, House of Representatives for the Fifth Congressional District, along with a delegation of Representatives visited Wilkes Community College and did a needs assessment of facili ties for our campus. He became one of our strong allies to allow the people to vote for the bond. Today we see the beginning of something great that is about to happen on the campus of Wilkes Community College.
