Shawn Yambor Receives
Distinguished Academic
All-American Award
By Sandy Sheets
After graduating from high school, Shawn
Yambor attended a community college near
his home for about six months. Shawn was
active in sports during his high school years
and found that going to class daily, without
the outlet of playing sports, was monotonous.
He quit college and resigned himself to
working without any further education when
he was contacted by Kerry Nichols. Head
coach of the Wilkes Community College
baseball team, Nichols had seen Shawn play
baseball and knew of his love for the game.
Shawn was injured playing ball his senior
year in high school and was told by doctors
that he would not be able to pitch ball again.
“When Coach Nichols offered me a second
chance to play ball,” states Yambor, “I knew
I had to go to Wilkes Community College.
He (Nichols) believed in me and I proved to
myself that I could do it.”
Not only has Shawn proven that he can be a
winner on the pitchens mound, he has also
proven himself a winner in the classroom. In
August, 1997, Shawn was notified that he
had achieved the honor of being recognized
by the National Junior College Athletic
Association (NJCAA) as a Distinguished
Academic All-American in both the Sport
and Academic categories. To qualify as an
academic all-American by sport, a student
athlete must have completed three semesters
