New Computer Room Policy
By Jeanne Griffin
The Business and Public Service
Technologies Division has a new computer
room policy. Of the courses offered in the
business curricula, 52% are held in a com
puter room and 67% have computer activities
required in the syllabi. Consequently, the
computer rooms, 136, 147, and 152 are
scheduled solely for classes. Only students
enrolled in a class may use these rooms dur
ing the class. The rooms are locked at other
times.
Room 144 is operated as an open lab.
Students, who need to use a computer, may
go to room 144 during the times on the fol
lowing schedule.
Priority is given to students who are referred
by their instructors with specific computer
assignments. Others may use the lab on a
space available basis. You do not have to be
referred by an insUoictor to use the lab, but
must be a currently enrolled student.
Room 144 is equipped with PCi's that have a
CD-ROM drive. The computers operate
under Windows 95 and are loaded with
Microsoft Office 97, Microsoft Publisher 97,
Netscape, and several tutorial programs for
specific classes such as Business Math,
Keyboarding, and Accounting. The Spanish
language CDs are also available in 144.
Students who do not have an Internet account
can contact the Business Division instructors
from 144 by accessing the home page of the
department.
Students check into and out of the lab on a
computer at the door. Lab instructors are
available at all times for assistance. Daily
attendance reports are printed each evening
and instructors receive weekly reports.
If you have not had a chance to visit the open
lab, please do so. Any suggestions or com
ments about the lab, the schedule, the pro
grams, etc. are welcome. Please give these to
your instructor, the lab instructor, or e-mail
the chairperson at griffinj@wilkes.cc.nc.us.
