Human Services Student,
Tonya Oliver, Is A True Leader!
By Crystal Miller
Tonya Oliver is to be commended. She is a full time student enrolled
in the Human Services program. Tonya is the president of the Human
Services Club and is very active in the club’s activities. She coordi
nates many of the club’s various fundraisers and is a voice for its
many members. Tonya is a leader and likes to see that things get
done.
Outside of her busy school life, Tonya is a mother as well as the
Neighborhood Service Coordinator for the N. Wilkesboro Department
of Housing and Community Development. She devotes endless hours
to the residents of public housing. Tonya assist these residents in ob
taining services made available through public agencies. Her primary
focus is to keep the children who live in these communities busy and
off the streets. She coordinates activities in the summer while the
children are out of school. These include arts and crafts, story time,
and anything that children find fun and interesting. Tonya is also re
sponsible for the first Drug Awareness Program in the Wilkes Public
Housing Department. Her Anti-Drug Rally and effort to clean up the
community have been accredited with the significant decrease in drug-
related arrests and drug-related crime in the public housing areas. Her
goal is to eliminate the stereotypical image that subsidized housing
has carried for so many years. She would like the public to know that
these are good neighborhoods filled with good people. Tonya has ex
ceeded the expectations of her job by expressing her many creative
ideas for the youth in the community. She is also responsible for or
ganizing a Big Brother program with the North Wilkesboro Police De
partment for children who need a friend.
Tonya has brought smiles and cheer to the community, and she takes
pride in her efforts to improve the living conditions of the residents of
public housing. Her accomplishments deserve recognition and her
support as the Neighborhood Service Coordinator is to be applauded.
Thank you, Tonya, for caring about people the way that you do, if
there were more of you out there, this world would truly be a better
place.

Traditions
By Carrie Rogers
Recently, several students at
WCC were asked about their
holiday plans, their favorite holi

traditions their families observe.
Nearly everyone who responded
stated their plans were to rest
and spend time with their fami

One student said he planned to
