Editors Comments on Clothesline Project Held at WCC By: Heather Dean On February 12, SAFE held their 8th annual Clothesline Project in the commons. Everywhere you could see shirts made by victims and family members of those whom have been affected by domestic and sexual violence. The shirts said things like “daddy, why is mommy always cry ing?”, “mommy stop hitting daddy”, and some of the victims had written moving and uplifting poems about the abuse and how they had over come it. One even had a quote from Christopher Robin to Pooh that goes something like “you are smarter and braver and stronger than you think”. Some of the more somber shirts were tomb stones, with the name of the person and the dates of their birth and death. The youngest was 16, killed by her boyfriend and the oldest was 60- ish, killed by her husband. One that caught my attention said, “Daddy, why did you kill mommy in front of our eyes?” Speaker Christy Adams, who is a volunteer with SAFE, Inc., spoke some powerful words. “Did you ever think that 16 would be middle age for you? Neither did my sister.” Her sister was killed by her husband, in a public place when she was 33, leaving her 3 small children behind. “Domestic violence affects us all. My sister was shot and killed in a public place. What if the bullet had strayed and hit your sister, daughter, or girlfriend? Don’t ever think that it won’t happen to you or some one you love. And don’t ever turn away from someone who needs your help-maybe they just want someone to talk to. Think of all the people who do talk and then think of how many more there are that don’t. My sister’s kids never did. And if we don’t get these kids out of these home situations, then they will be the next generation of abusers.” LOCAL BANDS COMING TO WCC!!
