Cougar Cry II Donation of Honor Submitted by: Tamara Grayson A two seated oak rocking chair has been placed on the patio near the rock wall of the Technical Arts building in celebration of the life and work of Ophelia Mayberry Adams. Robin Mayberry has donated this chair in memory of her aunt. Ophelia had enjoyed art lessons at Wilkes Community College for ten years and enriched the lives and artworks of all the students and instructors who knew her. It is the wish of the family that the students and faculty will enjoy the rocking chair and re member the joy and creativity of this wonder ful lady. A funny thing happened on the way to class... By; Heather Dean I was on my way to Stage Management and this little guy stopped me and asked which way to the library. Since I was already late, I was a bit agitated at being held up. I hurriedly pointed, hoping he wouldn’t try to tell his life story- but he did. This time it turned out to be great. His name is Edward L. Moore, and he is originally from good old Wilkes, but is now a teacher in Tennessee. He is a film buff! Want ing to keep true to his roots, he came back here just to drop off a few movies. He’s donating them to WCC in hopes of starting a visual arts department. Did I say a few movies? That would be 741 movies. Musicals, dramas, hor rors- froml915 to 2003, almost anything you can think of is there. Here’s an excerpt from the cover letter he wrote: “I am pleased to give my video library to WCC. I sincerely hope that this gift will evolve to a visual aids dept, in which students can reap many benefits as they see the develop ment of motion pictures. Young people can be nurtured by character developments; older per sons can be enriched by memorable movies and can learn new values. Do not dispose these of these vintage films. —continued Hopefully, you will find value in these un earthed treasure troves. I will continue buying videos, new and old. I want to help Wilkes Community College develop a visual arts de partment that will be the best in movies, crafting, acting, thespians, dancing etc. Your Fellow Film Buff Edward L. Moore Views from Non-traditional Students Submitted by; Students on Campus in cooperation with Daphine Grayum “It’s an adventure to better educate myself. Even if I never want to apply my degree. I’ll feel better about my achievements and hope fully encourage others to do the same. I could, however, do without the stress, but it’s to be expected when you haven’t been in school for thirty-some odd years. However, all things considered. I’m very happy and glad I came back to better myself and set goals as well as to complete an education with a degree. I did it! You can too!” “I was out of school for 10 years. I came back after all three of my children were in school. I was scared and excited!! I am glad I chose to come back. It helped me out a lot to realize I can do anything. It shows my children they can accomplish anything they want to. It is hard at times with three kids, school full time, and a husband, but I get by. It is the best thing I could have ever done!” J.J. “I felt as if I was being forced to come back to school after jobs were taken to Mexico. I needed different skills for another job. I have enjoyed coming back to school.” “Coming back to school has been hard, but at the same time it’s been a great experience in learning different things. The nice people I have met here at college have been so great. It’s been fun to come back to school to see if I can make it in college.”
