Cougar Cry 6 WHO?? By: Daphine Grayum I’d like to challenge the students (and maybe some faculty?) to answer a few trivia ques tions, if I may... Let’s see how many of these questions you can answer correctly! (Don’t cheat and read ahead just to find the answer; really try!) ♦ Who was the first president of the United States? Easy! Let’s hear it, you history buffs out there! Want a hint? We know him as George W... No, not George W. Bush! (Answer: Our first United States President was George Washington!) Good! But that was too easy! Let’s try another! ♦ Who was the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the earth on February 20, 1962? Come on now... I know a lot of you weren’t born at that time but surely you’ve heard of him! Here’s a hint...John... G. No, not Garfield... he was a former president! Here’s your last hint: He later became a Senator. (Answer: Our first astronaut was none other than John Glenn, Jr. Glenn piloted the Mer- cury-Atlas 6 “Friendship 7” spacecraft on the first manned orbital mission of the United States.) Let’s give credit to those who got that one (the faculty and maybe some of the non- traditional students, like myself). Let’s try another: ♦ Who made this effective statement? “I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn’t trust me so much." This one might not be too easy! I think you’ll be surprised at the answer! Here’s your hint. She’s known around the world but never wanted the acclamations she received. (Answer: Mother Teresa) Let’s try a few more and see how the younger crowd does with them! (I’ll make these a little easier by noting peo ple and their contributions to Wilkes Com munity College) ♦ Who was the celebrated musician that put our campus, as well as our modest town, on the map? Need a hint? (Probably not! This one everyone should know.) One more hint and that’s all...we have a garden on campus that visitors can “feel” their way through. (Answer: None other than the legendary Merle Watson. The garden? Why, it’s the “Garden for the Senses” of course! Thanks to Doc Watson’s tribute to his son. Merle, Wilkes County as well as WCC receives much needed, additional revenue each spring due to MerleFest! How are you doing so far? Are you up for just a few more? Don’t give up yet! Try just a couple more! Who was the first president of Wilkes Com munity College? This one is a given, every one should get this one... Still stumped? Ok, here’s your hint: His portrait welcomes you as you climb the stairs in Thompson Hall. Aw... Come on...surely you’ve figured him out by now! (Answer: Our very own Dr. Howard E. Thompson!) Below is our last “who” to be identified. Hope you are ready for this one! Who was North Carolina’s Poet Laureate from 1953 to 1981? Now, now, everyone should know this one! Ok... let me help a little more: Don’t know what a poet laureate is? Let me explain it to you. A poet laureate is a person appointed by the governor of the state in which he/she lives, to be an ambassador, and is charged with promoting poetry and literature, in his/her state and beyond.
