By Lynda Black You may have noticed tall poles with blue lights on top located around the Wilkes Community College campus. These are the new call boxes being installed to improve the safety of students, employees, and visitors to our campus. The call boxes are funded by a grant the college has received from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women. When the six call boxes are installed, they will be in the following locations: • By the security office (for times security offi cers are on patrol and not in the office) • The duck pond by the parking lot • Beacon building • Daniel Hall • Behind Randolph Hall (the entrance that leads to the gym) • Student Center parking lot The call boxes are for use in emergency situations. When activated, the blue light at the top of the pole will flash. Information plates will be attached soon and will provide directions on how to use to call box. Between seven in the morning and midnight, you can press the HELP button for WCC Security. During the hours of midnight to seven in the morning, you can dial 911 for assistance from WCC Security or the Wilkesboro Police Department. Each call box has a camera monitor to record any ac tivity around the call box so a record exists of who activates the box and what may be occurring at that time. The call boxes on campus are for the safety of students in emergency situations. Abuse of the call boxes will result in penalties, ranging up to and including suspension. Any person who intentionally calls the 911 number for other than purposes of obtain ing public safety assistance commits a class I misde meanor. The Cougar Cry would like to wish Cathy Annas a happy retirement!! Thanks for the help you’ve given so many WCC students.
