Page 2 SGA Sponsors Blood Drive By :Lauren Brelsford The SGA sponsored a blood drive on September 17th with the help of American Red Cross coordinator Peggy Jacques and nineteen SGA volunteers. Unlike previous blood drives, which consisted of completing medical histories and donating blood in thel American Red Cross blood mobile, this blood drive was held entirely in the John A. Walker Center. During previous blood drives, donors had felt uncomfortable due to the lack of adequate privacy and space. While there were initial concErns that the location of the Walker Center would discourage would-be donors, the donors that made the journey up to the blood drive remarked that they felt much more comfortable and appreciated the extra privacy that the Walker Center provided. WCC staff member Paula Eller commented: "The Walker Center provides a much better environment for the blood drive because it offers the privacy and comfort that the donors really need." After donating, donors were encouraged to sign the "Wall of Heroes" banner displayed in Alumni Hall and to enjoy the abundance of delicious biscuits and muffins donated by the local Bojangles restaurant. The American Red Cross "Bloodhound" also made tours around the WCC campus and distributed Life Saver candies to the students and staff. Despite the somewhat remote location, the SGA was able to meet its goal of collecting fifty-five units of usable units of blood. The final count given by the American Red Cross totaled sixty-three. Although all currently scheduled blood drives are to be held in Alumni Hall, it is hoped that the success of this blood drive will make it possible for future blood drives to be held in the Walker center.
