Page 2 Beetle Warns Against “The Juice” Cougar Cry By; Mike Roape, Counselor Student Services Did you know that alcDhol kills more youth in our country than all illegal drugs combined? To raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol, nearly 7D WCC students and staff experienced a unique ride on October 29th. As part of Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week, the VW Beetle arrived, all the way from Pennsylvania, to a road course set-up in Beacon parking lot. The Pennsylvania DU! Association's "Safety Bug" was designed with a proprietary system, custom engineered to demonstrate the loss of control one experiences if operating a vehicle in an impaired state. Since inebriation causes delays in cognitive and motor reflexes, controls for the Beetle (such as steering and braking) would become delayed, simulating inebriation. Many faculty and students appeared confident of their abilities while waiting in line, yet faltered when driving around the road course. Grange cones frequently became airborne! Such is the case with drinking and driving-though casualties can be greater than orange cones. As judgment becomes impaired, individuals often have a false sense of their abilities on the road. The Safety Bug helped everyone gather valuable experience and hopefully prevent risky behavior in the future. A special thanks to all the student volunteers on October 29th that made the road course possible! To remind everyone. Student Services provides free and confidential assessments for drug and alcohol abuse.
