Mitchell Burtie Dlx Fred Morris Blanche Dixon Thomas G. Perry Gladys Highflll A. L. Riddick Alma Lassiter C. R. Hinshaw SUBSCRIPTION TRICE SL.O(> Address all communications to THE GUILFORDIAN Guilford College, N. C. PERSEVERANCE. It is as old as the hills to say that "Perseverance conquers all tilings/' and likewise the truth of this proverb today is as firm and unshaken as the everlasting hills themselves. The persistency with which this idea finds human ex pression in all ages, shows the uni versality of its truth. The Greek fable of "The Tortoise and the Hare," the Latin maxim, "The gods sell all things for labor," the more modern "Constant dropping wears away stone," and the twen tieth century coinage "Stick-at-it iveness" are lint different phras ings of the same great thought. In imitation of the "By Faith" chapter of Scriptures, if space and time permitted we could compile a catalogue of actions 110 less he roic, which were accomplished "by perseverance." "Home was not built in a day" is a saw that we have heard since childhood, but Home by perseverance, day after day, became the mistress of the world. Search history, and point out, if you can, the least ste]> in the inarch of civilization, the slightest reform of any kind, that was not accomplished with travail and suffering, by Perseverance. "Perseverance conquers all things." Yes! Even Mathemat ics, German and History. But Perseverance is almost an un known quantity at Guilford Col lege. True, there are a few brave souls who labor on courageously in the face of any difficulty, but how many of us are willing "to lie down on the job," and say "I can't," the moment a hard prob lem looms up before us! Let us be honest with ourselves. Many of us are quitters, and the world has no place for a quitter! If a course is hard and requires work, we drop it, and seek for an easy one. But what are we going to do when we get out into the turmoil and strife of this busy world? There we shall have problems to face, which cannot be dropped or avoided. The issue must be met! We must meet it. Are we going to be quitters still? The answer is plan. We cannot be otherwise, mi less we learn right here and now to face our problems, to meet our hard tasks and to overcome them. College is merely a prepara tion for life, and the attitude wo cultivate here will be the attitude that will go with us throughout life. Let 11s feel as the prophet of old, when he was building his wall— "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." For truly we are doing as great a work as he. We are laying the founda tions for life; we are building the walls of character, and we cannot leave our work and come down 011 every pretext. Stay 011 the job! Don't quit, simply because it is hard! As it takes diamond to cut diamond, and steel to turn steel, so it takes a big man to till a big place, and to overcome a big ob stacle. Bememlier "Perseverance con quers all things " and— "The heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight. But they, while their companions slept, Were toiling upward in the night." CALENDAR. Wednesday: G:3O, Freshman class meeting; 7,00, Science Club. Thursday: Regular mid-week prayer meetings at 6:30. It is with pleasure that we are able to announce that Samuel 11. Hodgin and family are soon to re turn to North Carolina. Three years ago Professor Hodgin ac cepted the presidency of Wilming ton College, Ohio, and has filled the same with marked success and to the great satisfaction of the Board of Managers. In resigning his position he abandons the pro fession of teaching and has ar ranged for entering some business in the city of Greensboro. A clipping from a Wilmington paper concludes thus: "While the news of his determination to sever his connection with the college will be a surprise to many and while his friends in Wilmington and in the zone of influence of the institution will regret very much that the college is to lose him, everybody will wish him the high est degree of success in his new THE GUILFORDIAN "Get It At Odeil's" Quality First Base Ball, Basket Ball, Tennis, Track and Gym Supplies Sweaters, Jerseys and Athlectic Clothing A Specialty Odell Hardware Company Greensboro, N.
