Few people realize the meaning of Christmas. We think of it as the time when we are given two weeks holiday. The children think of it as the time when Santa Claus comes. All this is true, but it has a deeper meaning. It is the anni versary of the birth of Christ. The birth of Christ was the begin ning of the Christian religion, which in turn was the beginning of progress. We owe all our op portunities and all that we are to Christianity. Then let us as stu dents thoughtfully hallow the birthday of Him who made this possible. Catch the message of Christ, which was service, and you will have, as we wish you to, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. THE ANNA YARNALL BOOKS. Within the last few months Guilford College Library has re ceived from the Anna Yarnall es tate practically her entire library. This means some 2,000 books or more. They are not j r et all cata logued and hence the exact num ber cannot be given. Anna Yarnall was of a scholar ly family and herself a great read er hence the collection is an un usually interesting and valuable one. Miss Yarnall was a school mate of Mary M. Hobbs and the school friendship only ripened and deepened as the years went by. It was this friendship which secured this gift to Guilford. The sets of histories and biogra phies and works in literature are beautifully bound and what adds more to their value are the marks showing the use of the owner and her familiarity with them. To say that Guilford appreci ates this gift is to speak mildly, for among them are works which we have long wanted but had. not yet had the income sufficient to purchase, notably, Masson's Life of Milton, a ten volume set of Browning; Thoreau, complete; Lamb, complete; Aleson, History of Europe. (These are beautiful ly bound.) Morely's Gladstone; Gurney, complete. (These also are in elegant binding.) Scott and Dickens, complete. Besides a great many classical works and much French literature. When the books have been cata logued a more careful analysis of them can be given. ALUMNI NOTES. Mr. E. O.
