ALUMNI NOTES.
Mr. E. J. Coltrane, 'O7, who is
again in charge of Jamestown High
School, has just been elected as Pres
ident of the Guilford County Sunday
School Association. This recognition
is an indication of the interest which
Mr. Coltrane has been giving the
movement for better work in our
Sunday Schools in this county.
Miss Flora W. White, 'll, who was
a member of the faculty of the Sum
mer School of the South at Nash
ville, Tenn., is now connected with
the domestic science department of
the State Normal in Greensboro.
Miss White is instructing in dietetics.
Mr. H. A. Carroll, 'l4, is Principal
of Mountain View Institute at Miz
pah. We understand that he is prov
ing conclusively an exception to the
rule that "a prophet is not without
honor save in his own country."
Mr. Wm. A. White, 'l4, who was
the Guilford scholarship man at Hav
erford in 1914-15, and who was lo
cated in Mobile, Ala., teaching his
tory in the high school of that city,
has returned to Haverford to work
for his Master's degree. Mr. White
holds a SSOO fellowship at Haver
ford. Incidentally, Guilford is well
represented at Haverford in the per
sonages of Fred Henley, 'l4, Alpheus
White, 'l4, and Fred Morris, 'l6.
UNCLE MUNN'S CORNER.
(Editor's Note.—The two articles
appearing in this corner do not indi
cate that Uncle Munn's material has
the right-of-way over other matters/
It only happened from the fact that
he submitted a couple and we were
utterly unable to tell which was the
worse.)
When I get feeble down and out a
hundred things come thick and stout
to make me think I'm in a route
that's lined with cripples, cranks and
gout. With salty back and ateak
that's hard and rancid streaks within
the lard which makes my biscuit
taste retard, and I sit stubborn as a
Prussian guard. My wife coimes in
with a silly grin, her hair is straight
as a sturgeon fin. With a smile of
suppression spread over her chin, she
draws up close and then we begin.
She says the weather is making me
mad or that I've gone crazy on some
such fad and there is nothing will
making me glad until I've samipled
the good and bad. She says she'd
leave me if she wouldn't have to
break the solemn old vows the
preacher made us take, and to sacri
fice a hope we both had at stake when
we sold our freedom for a wedding
cake. When she starts good I drop
my head, for when she's finished
there'll be enough said. She'll cry
and quarrel till time for bed. Her
eyes'll swell up and her nose'll turn
red. But I've found by example that
it all comes about from the way I'm
feeling when I'im down and out. So
I'm making a promise that I WILL
feel good if every day is cloudy in my
neighborhood.
Beyond the brown autumn a
wealth of roses are budding in In
finite spring; there the breezes of
love are rustling the vines where
notes of song birds ring. The gurgle
of a faint brook dashes from that sea
son of laughter and play and it
beckons to me while it clashes with
the flowers of its verdant way. It
rocks me to sleep with its music; I
rest in its fragrant dreams and I
wake with a fitful fancy to be borne
away on its streams.
THE GUILF ORDI AN
Y. M. C. A. PREPARES FOR WEEK
OF PRAYER.
The meeting was under the leader
ship of no particular person. In the
beginning the president stated that
the meeting would be thrown open
for a general discussion on the sub/
ject of prayer. He then read a mes
sage from John R. Mott urging that
all young men give more time to
prayer and meditation because it
helps to broaden their vision, enables
them to live a better moral life and
in short makes them more consecra
ted.
After the reading and a few re
marks by the president, several other
members gave short but very inter
esting talks on the subject.
"Prayer," it was said, "helps to un
lock great responsibilities," for if a
person will only take time to pray
and meditate over everyday problems
they will present themselves in quite
a different light than they ever have
before. "Prayer also bridges the
chasm between us and God and
furthermore it is a social fellowship
with God." These are two of the
greatest factors in prayer because by
it one can hold communion with his
Creator.
After the remarks by the several
students, the president announced
that beginning with the following
Sunday night the week of prayer
would be observed by the Associa
tion. Fifteen minutes each night for
one week will be devoted to united
prayer and it is urged that every
member be present at each meeting
because it will strengthen his faith in
God and better equip him for a suc
cessful life.
Remember the date of "A Virginia
Heroine," November 25, at 8 p. m.
Don't forget the Y. W. C. A. play.
