Newlin Mary Ina Shamburger Address all communications to THE GUILFORDIAN, Guilford College, N. C. SUBSCRIPTION PRICE SI.OO PER YEAR Christmas Carols and fire-crackers in strange juxtaposition have at last forced us to realize that the most joyous time of all the year is upon us. Uncle Munn has just invaded our sanctum and desecrated it by an atrocious contribution about Christ mas. Our friends are hurrying about doing their Christmas shopping late as usual and we are sitting here with our feet, metaphorically speaking, on the mantel-piece, burdened by the realization that we must follow the time-honored custom and grind out a Christmas editorial. As we watch the snow eddying past our window we can see in our mind's eye the many little tots who are clapping their hands in joyful anticipation of that greatest of all boons, a white Christmas. But with the sophistication born of years of experience we look at the calendar, shake our head, and place our im plicit faith in Munn's cynical prophe sy of sloppy slush. Yet thru it all, despite our efforts to dilute the Christmas spirit by captious jests about gifts which are neither useful nor ornamental, despite the grave injustices of life which always seem so much greater in the holiday sea son, as Christmas approaches we gradually catch the joyous spirit till at last we can sit down and send a greeting of cheer to our dearest ene my. A thousand mischances unite to weigh us down, yet the buoyant vitality of the Christmas spirit sweeps us thru at last to joy and happiness. The continuance of the terrible war in Europe, the increas ing perplexities of our own country's position, the industrial problems which are rising with ever increas ing menace, the problems of our own beloved Alma Mater form a weight of trouble which at times almost crushes our soul, yet we are com forted by the realization that the measure of true happiness is not its freedom from alloy of trouble and pain, but rather its ability to absorb them and be uninjured. go if you have troubles—if you feel the utter impossibility of being joyous at this glad Christmas time; if you feel sullen and glum when your small brother steals downstairs at midnight to waken the neighbors with his noisy exhibitions of joy; if you feel uncharitable and even irrev erent at the sound of glad carols from a watch service in a near-by church; if as you lie there on Christ mas morning you feel none of the joy of living, but only the dry bones of a poor existence, take hold of yourself with a firm hand —shake off the lethargy, shout a hearty "Merry Christmas," not a shame-faced mum ble of words, to the first person you see, lend a hand and earn a share in the joyous Christmas spirit and in proportion as your troubles are greater than those of your friends so will your happiness be greater than theirs. And when the holidays are over bring back the same spirit and we will see whether two hundred stu dents with the glad spirit of joy and sacrifice cannot do as much for Guilford as thousands of dollars of endowment. The Guilfordian wishes to thank Miss Gainey for the two numbers of Volume I asked for in our last issue. Our file of Volumes I and II is now complete. We hope to make a care ful index of these two volumes and have them bound. They will be kept in the Guilfordian office and, in ad dition to the two similar volumes in the Library, will form a valuable supply of material for the future his torians of Guilford College, and for the biographers of its alumni. We also wish to extend our thanks to Prof. Woosley for contributing three framed pictures which now adorn the walls of the editorial sanc tum. One is a picture of the first Guilfordian Board (1914-1915) and the other two represent the Collegian staffs of 1909-1910 and 1910-1911. We also have secured a picture of the Collegian staff of 1907. As the faces of former editors gaz ing down upon us will be a source of inspiration to us in our labors we trust that we shall receive further gifts of this nature.
