This question has been troubling the minds of many Guilford students who have been watching the ludi crous efforts of certain gentlemen of African descent who have apparently been raking the leaves off the camp us. They started early in March. Neat little piles were made. The next day the wind demolished the piles. New piles were made. Again the wind spoiled them. Again and again was the .process repeated. As Sisyiphus rolled the stone up the hill only to find it to descend again, as Tantalus grasped the grapes only to see them vanish, so did Wakefields doughty deciples practise repeatedly that old precept "If you don't at first succeed, try, try again." Finally some genius hit upon the plan of loading the leaves into wagons. We are happy to say that the last leaf will soon leave. At a recent chapel exercise Dr. Meredith, for the faculty, announced the election of Jesse P. Garner as holder of the Haverford College scholarship for the coming year, 1917-1918, and Mary Ina Shamburg er as the Guilford representative at Bryn Mawr College for the coming year. Jesse P. Garner is a splendid col lege man, one who will make an ex cellent representative. He is a thorough student, having made good grades during his entire course here. He is, however, anything but a grind. Every college activity has called up on him for his energy and he lias always answered with a distinct con tribution. He has been a member of the baseball team for four seasons, this year captaining the best team which Guilford has produced in a number of years. He is president of the Athletic Association, and was also a member of the Guilford Foot ball Club. In Y. M. C. A. he has been equally effective, having had the Bible Study department under his care during the past year. In his class, dramatic and musical fea tures of college life Garner has stood in the front. As a typical Guilford product, Guilford need not fear for her record with Garner as her rep resentative. Guilford will also be well repre sented at Bryn Mawr by Mary Ina Shamburger. She has taken high rank in scholarship during her four years at Guilford, having won the Marvin Harden scholarship in her sophomore year. She has ever been loyal to collegiate activities, being particularly devoted to class and stu dent government duties. She was the .moving spirit in organizing the system of Student Government for the girls. The Y. M. C. A. iias also taken no little amount of her time as she has been treasurer of this or ganization for several years. Her Senior year has featured by her work in the library, assisting Miss Julia White. As alternates Jesse Stanley and Ruth Coble were chosen by the fac ulty. VANSTORY CLOTHING COMPANY Modern Clothing GREENSBORO, N. C. THE BROADWAY CAFE Greensboro, N. C. Opposite the Postoffice.
