LETTERS TO THE GUILFORDIAN. (Nothing under thi6 head is neces- sarily endorsed by the Board or any member of it.) UPSET THE FRUIT BASKET, A new student comes into the din ing room and blindly sits down at the first vacant seat available. There he or she remains during the whole year and probably tor the next two or three years. The company may not be congenial but custom, habit and timidity forbid a change. The Guilford "system" of seating in the dining room has two distinct disadvantages. It is based to some extent on chance and, by not en couraging any changes, takes away a good opportunity to become ac quainted with all of our fellow stu dents. In a small college like Guil ford clannishness should be discour aged by every possible means. Every student should become the intimate friend of every other student. The dining room affords the best means available for learniing more about each other. Why not introduce a little excitement into the monoton ous routine of eating by occasionally shuffling the pack. The interest cre ated by such changes would be a good aid to digestion and acquaint ance. Who knows what unknown affinities might be discovered, what new and lasting friendships might be formed. The same jokes could be told over again and no one would be the wiser. We would suggest that the Senior class take the matter in charge and appoint a committee to reseat the dining room about once a month. The Seniors, being human, would be, perhaps, somewhat susceptable to advice or bribes on the part of those who might desire certain table com panions and if so, this would pro mote rather than hinder congenial ity. Appropriate place cards could be made and the day of change be come a real festive occasion. Per- : haps Mr. Fallow could be persuaded to kill a chicken in honor of the event. W. I.
