ANNOUNCEMENTS IN HONOR OF ST. VALENTINE The "Old Oak," artisically decor ated with ivy, hundreds of cupids, hearts and red and white candles, was the scene of a very gay party Saturday evening when the Misses Bertha Fox, Alma Crutchfield and Mary White entertained in honor of St. Valentine. After the guests had assembled, they were given paper hearts and were asked to write Val entine verses to some one present. This proved to be very amusing as most of the verses were original and apropos. After several vocal selec tions by Misses Hoibbs, Doughton and Fox, came a short scene repre senting the old-fashioned game of "'John and Mary" and the reading of a letter from "Bill" to "dere Mabel" thus paving the way for what ap peared a little later on when the guests were ushered into the dining room. There on the table, a train filled with red and white carnations and marked up for Elamere, Del., immediately became the center of interest. After a very delightful buffet supper each guest was pre sented with a carnation in which she discovered two little white hearts, one announcing the marriage of Mr. William Nelson to Miss Mable Crutchfield in June, and the other that of Mr. John Downing to Miss Mary Fox in July. The brides-elect were at once surrounded by their many friends and were showered with a host of good wishes. iThose ipresent were: Mesdames Crutchfield, Fox, Park 6 and White, and the Misses Mable Cruthfield, Mary Fox, Ballinger, Cotton, Dixon, Doughton, Blackburn, Hobbs, Hold er, Lasley, Lindley, Lineberger, Ed wards, Roberts, Yates and Worth. LITERARY CLUB STUDIES RUSSIA On Thursday evening, February 6, the Lierary Club held its first regu lar meeting. The president after calling the club to order, asked for the seci'etary's report. These min utes consisted of the election of offi cers and of new members. The offi cers were given as follows: Presi dent, Miss Roberts; vice-president, Mrs. Hobbs, and secretary, Miss Noles. The new members were as follows: Professor and Mrs. Ans cornjbe, President and Mrs. Binford, Miss Julia Ball, Miss Ella Ball, Pro fessor and Mrs. Carroll, Miss Fox, Miss Gifford, Mr. Guevchenian and Mr. Ruckes. The evening's program was composed of these numbers: The History of the land of Russia Binford; the history of the people by Miss Ella Ball. Mrs. Binford gave a comprehen sive view of the racial and geograph ical growth of the country, describ ing the primitive settlements along the rivers, the iSlavic invasions, the annexation of Poland, and the unifi cation of the empire before the reign of Peter the Great. Miss Ella Ball gave a clear ex planation of the change in Russian life from the days of feudal serfdom to the modern period of industrial serfdom. The growing class con sciousness following the industrial revolution, terminating in the revo lutions of 1905 and 1917 was ex plained carefully. Both reports kindled the interest of all the members present in the Russian situation. GUILFORD BEATEN BY CAROLINA AND TRINITY (Continued from first page) Rice 3, Stafford 1.
