RIGHT TO DECLARE AVAR BY POPULAR VOTE DISCUSSED. The Henry Clays met in regular session Friday evening. For the first time since the flu made its inroads upon the membership attendance re gained its normal condition. The query: Resolved, That war should be declared in the United States by popular vote only, was discussed. The affirmative, E, L. Hollady, E. Mcßane, L. Williams, were successful in gianing the decis ion of the judges by showing that the proposed system would give a true representative decision of the people, and that it would prevent an over-hasty or imprudent declaration or war. The negative, represented by G. Doughton, M. Shore and Nichols, at tacked the proposal of the affirma tive on the grounds that the time re quired to get an intelligent vote of the people would be too long; that our present system is representative and has been successful. H. L. Dorrity then gave an inter esting discussion of noteworthy hap penings, both national and local. The society is gratified to note that the participants in the program were largely new men. Every Henry Clay extends a most hearty welcome to N. H. Marlette, an old Clay, who is again in our midst full of the snap and ginger which marked his previous society record. SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE. For the last few Sundays there have been no services on Sunday morning on account of the influenza epidemic in the community. On Sunday morning of this week church services were held in Memo rial Hall. Dr. Binford opened the service by reading a portion of the first chapter of St. John. He spoke of the light which always follows darkness, comparing the same to the Reformations which come as an out growth of a preceding period of un rest and discontent. The fact that men today are fearful of the charac ter of the outcome of the present great upheaval, and that men, not eclesiastical, state that Christianity must be the determining factor in the outcome are significant. Professor Anscombe continued the service by taking as his text, "For ye were bought with a price, there fore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God's." We are God's because we are created by Him and all gifts and powers come from Him. We are God's because He gave His life to redeem ours. As our life comes from Him, we should dedicate our lives to Him for ser vice. This is a personal question which each of us musr answer for ' himself. SCHOLASTIC EDUCATION VS. TECHNICAL TRAINING At their regular meeting Friday evening, February 20, the Philoma- ■ theans gave the following program: Reading—Miss Hayworth. Impersonation—Miss Donna Mc bane. Philomathtan Characteristics Miss Lassiter. • Debate—Resolved, That the devel opment Of character plus prepara tion for an efficient productive man hood can better be attained by schol astic education than by technical training. The affirmative was upheld by Miss Thompson, while >the negative was upheld by Miss Reynolds. The society was very proud of the spirit and enthusiasm that the debaters showed. The judges decided in fa vor of the negative. Solo—Miss Harmon. Soliloquy—Miss Hayworth. After a critic's report by Miss Stewart the society adjourned.
