PROSPECTIVE Y. W. C. A. CHOIR
It is hoped that an organized choir
will soon become an active element
of the Young Women's Christian As
sociation. The choir has not yet
been organized, but is to be in the
near future.
Our present plan of singing at Y.
W. meetings is not bad at all, for
everyone takes part, and that is
well. However, there might be a lit
tle more system as to selection of
songs that bear directly on the lead
er's subject.
The choir is to have a director
who shall be chosen or elected. It
shall be the duty of the members of
the choir to select music for and be
present at the regular meetings of
the association. Members of the
choir will provide specia lmusic from j
time to time.
It is suggested that the young men
form a similar band of songsters in
their association in order that the
two choirs may co-operate with the
music committees in furnishing spe
cial music for Sunday chapel, and
for joint meetings of the associa
tions when such are permissible.
We believe that the musical part
of our meetings will be more suc
cessful and enjoyable if it is planned
and led by an organized choir.
The college unites in extending an
expression of sympathy to Miss Alma
Edwards, because of the death of
her brother, Philip Edwards. Feeling
that her experience must, in a meas
ure, be ours, we share with her a
sense of personal loss. That we
may follow our work in a spirit of
service like that of Philip Edwards,
is our prayer for ourselves, for our
college and for our common state.
PHILOMATHEANS HEAR
SCOTCH PROGRAM
On Friday evening, Feb. 27, the
Philomatheans were entertained by
the members of the last group in the
contest series. The utmost interest
was shown throughout the program.
The numbers were well prepared,
each member on the program being
familiar with her part. The contest
series of groups have been very suc
cessful and the programs have been
well arranged and prepared by each
group. To decide which group has
given the best program would be a
difficult task. They have all won
the prize of improvement, for the
programs have shown a marked de
velopment in the interest of the so
ciety at large.
Miss Nell Schoolfield in a clear
and distinct manner gave the devel
opment of Scotland, the origin of
the early people, and some of the
legendary stories about the country.
Miss Schoolfield said, "Among the
factors which have played an im
portant part in the development
were the Norman conquest, Chris
tianity and the Reformation. The
Reformation was the cause of the up
building of the educational system."
The second number, "Burns, the
Man," was given by Miss Annie
Brown.
The third number was a panto
mine, "Comin' Thru the Rye," by
Miss Hope Motley.
Miss Myrtle Cox read a number of
the best short poems by Burns.
"Scotch Quotations," by Miss Alta
Zachary, were much enjoyed.
The last number, "My Laddie," J
was sung by Miss Motley.
Quite a number of old Guilford
ians were here last Thursday night
for the A. & E. game. Among these
were J. B. Woosley, 'l2, Ruth Col
trane, 'l9, Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Wil
lard, 'l9, and E. B. Carroll, 'l7.
Gladstone Groome, Shirley N.
White and Kirk Patten also came
out to see the Quakers in action once
more.
