ANNUAL CLAY ORITORICAL
CONTEST
(Continued from first page.)
bilities of the aeroplane as a com
mercial carrier as well as a fighting
machine were predicted.
The third number of the evening,
"The Fall and Rise of a Nation," a
plea for the infant democracy of
Russia, was given by J. C. Newlin.
Mr. Newlin sketched the conditions
which surrounded the birth of the
naw republic, and urged her offcial
recognition by the allied nations.
On the oration, "The Waste of
War and the Wealth of Peace," by
Edward L. Hallady, a contrast was
made between the expenditures for
war and civil administration. Mr.
Hallady made a plea for the reduc
tion of armaments and the use of
the savings thereby gained for the
purpose of peace.
The last oration was delivered by
H .G. Mcßane. "Heroes Unsung," a
tribute to the men of science. The
admirable work of these men in sci
entific research was accentuated and
a higher appreciation of their
achievements stimulated.
While the judges were reaching a
decision a vocal solo, "Tommy Lad,"
was given by N. A. Fox.
The Henry Clay Society was for-
I'.uiate in securing as judges H. A.
Carroll, Kirby C. Dowen and Charles
L. Lambeth.
SENIORS IX HOME ECONOMICS
PIONEERS IN IMPORTANT
MOVEMENT
The Seniors of this year in Home
Economics are pioneers in many re
spects. They are charter members
of the Home Economics Department
at Guilford, having entered as first
year pupils when the work was in
troduced three years ago; they in
augurated the school-lunch, which
was this year of only one week's du
ration, but which we hope to hear
more of in the future; and now they
are beginning a movement which
may be far reaching in consequences
—that of practice teaching, with
pupils from the graded school. A
short course, covering a period of
eight weeks, has been planned by
the Seniors as a part of their regu
lar class work, and to each Senior
is assigned the teaching of a definite
part of the course. A request for
pupils from the graded school was
courteously responded to by Profes
sor Carroll and as a result eighteen
bright, enthusiastic girls have been
enrolled from the advanced classes
at the graded school. The members
of the Senior class doing the teach
ing are Madge Cable, Mary Cable,
Anna Henley and Prances Mc-
Cracken.
It has been the policy of the De
partment of Home Economics to
have, from time to time, exhibits
of work done in the various courses.
One of the most interesting of all
those given this year was the Laun
dry exhibit on last Monday after
noon by the class in House work.
Begining with a microscopical ex
amination of the four fibers from
which cloth is made, the observer
was carried through the consecutive
steps in the laundering of the vari
ous fabrics; stains, reogents and
methods of removal; soaps of various
kinds; blues, with an anaylsis of the
four kinds found on the market;
starches, with classification, and
characteristics of each. Interesting
posters showed modern laundry
equipment. Actual work done by the
class included silk and cotton waists,
sheer white dresses, woolen sweaters
and woolen skirts.
