October 13, 1920. ALUMNI NOTES At the commenceme t meeting of the Alumni Association, it was de cided to launch a movement to in terest graduates and old students in athletics at the College. The Associa tion went on record as favoring some form of required and super vised re reation for all students at tending Guilford College. To make effective a scheme of general athlet ics the Association conceded the ne cessity of the moral and financial support of the Alumni and old stu dents. The chairman of the Associa tion Athletic Committee was instruct ed to prepare a letter setting forth the plan of Coach Doak and the Col lege authorities for general recrea tional athletics and mail to members of the Association. This letter was prepared and mailed to a greater part of those known to be interested in athletics, with the request that they join the College Athletic Association on the same basis as students--pay the regular fee, or more, if they saw fit, and he entitled to all the privi leges of active members. This in cludes season tickets for home games and schedules of all games. Funds received from this source are to he handled by the chairman of the Association Athletic Committee acting as Graduate Manager of Ath letics, thus putting the Association in a position to supervise athletics at the College in an advisory capaci ty. It is understood that no part of the funds so raised shall be employed in relieving defunct managers of athletic teams, but shall be used for permanent improvements and such equipment as becomes necessary to put general athletics on a sound ba sis. The response to this appeal has been reasonably generous, yet many who are doubtless interested have just neglected to avail themselves of this opportunity to help the cause along. It is not yet too late. If you have failed to get your letter, con sider this notice as personal and mail your check to L. L. White, Chairman of Committee, Guilford College, N. C. Season ticket will be forwarded you by return mail. C. G. Gainey 'O4 is Democratic candidate for County Commissioner, Cumberland county, and arinounces assurance of election in coming elec ta n. S: iARPE SPEAKS ON POLITICS (CONTIUED FROM PAGE ONE.) with a lecture given by Mrs. Mary Settle Sharpe, of Greensloro, N. C., the Republican candidate for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The lecture carried a special mes sage to the new voters in this state, the women. Mrs. Sharpe emphasized the fact that many men claim that politics is corrupt that the women should not have any part in it. But she believes that that is just the place the women are going to do their part. The politics of the women is going to be puie, regardless of party. A woman is not going to adept any kind of politics which she is not able to carry to her church. The state of religion under the King of kings and the state of government under the people are going to be considered subjects closely related to each other. Mrs. Sharp also spoke of the League of Nations, saying that she would not pledge herself to support any treaty which was formed in such a manner that the makers of the treaty had no time to offer prayer to God, asking for wisdom and counsel, in the forming of such a League. In addition she said, that the was not willing to uphold a Treaty that would fasten a noose around the neck of her own son while the other end of the rope was held by foreign power. Mrs. Sharpe is the daughter of the late Judge Settle of Greensboro, a man of whom North Carolina has every reason to be proud. She is a lady well fitted for the position which she will hold, State Superin tendent of Public Instruction. For thirty years she has been a teacher in Noi'th Carolina and knows full well the needs of the State. Today she stands ready to serve, and to work, to make the future citizens of this country, the children of today, one hundred per cent Americans. Southern Real Estate Company GREENSBORO, N. C.
