EDITORIAL
The world is full of people who
might succeed in life, yet who con
tinually lesson their possibilities of
success, and lower their self-respect
as well as the respect that others
have for them by their timidity or
lack of self-confidence.
How ten do we find ourselves
dumb and thoughtless when in the
presence of those who are intellect
ually superior to us. We are afraid
to speak a thought of our own
should we chance to have one, for
fear that it will not meet with the
approval l>f the one to whom we
speak. We ai*e too timid to look
people in the eye and think whether
or not we should approve of what
they say. If one would only think
we would likely produce a better
idea than they. Do we not oftentimes
show by our actions that, as mere
human beings we believe ourselves to
be inferior to some other human
being ? This timidity or self-con
sciousness has cost many persons po
sitions of honor and trust and has
lost to the world an immeasurable
host of people who might have con
tributed much lo it s progress.
All of this is certainly unnecessa
ry. Why should we not believe our
selves to possess as great possibil
ities as any other person ? Why
should one say, "I wish I could be
as great as that man?" 'ihe fact is,
that if we are to be the force in
.he world that we ought to be, we
must believe that we can be as great
as any other person in the world,
and work towards that end instead
of enjoying the position and ability
of others.
Then why not brace up, look
the world in the eye, express our
own thoughts as they come to us ?
'ihe world has ever admired those
who always express their true con
victions. The practice of self-con
fidence in the smallest tasks or dis
cussions wh.ch may arise, will soon
reveal hidden forces and unseen pos
sibilities, and instead of being sec
ond or third string men and women,
we will find that the world is calling
us to leadership in its higher institu
tions and in its more important woi'k.

Anna Henley, David White, Kath

of the class of 1920, visited friends
at the College Thanksgiving.
COMMUNITY SINGING
A community singing was held
at Memorial Hall- on Thanksgiving
afternoon at three o'clock. An un
usual number of people were present
and much interest was manifest. A
greater number of the college stu
dents remained on the campus during
Thanksgiving holiday this year than
ever before. For this reason more
students took part in singing the
old songs, the folk songs and the
college songs. The community peo
ple were there ready to participate
in singing with the college students
and through the leadership of Pro
fessor James W. White and Miss
Byrd a very profitable hour was
spent in singing, and enjoying the
old songs dear to every one.
