COLE DESCRIBES THE CHINESE WEDDING TO PHILS "A typical Shanghi wedding'' was the subject of Mrs. Cole's talk to the Philomathean Literary Society last Firday night. She described a wedding among the wealthy classes, who have adopted many of the western customs in their marriage ceremony. I It is the custom for the parents of ' the bride to send presents to the parents of the groom the day before the wedding. The bride also sends her own room furniture to the groom's home. The invitations which have been sent to the friends of the groom States that the wedding is at one o'clock. However, the bride does not | arive until about five o'clock when the groom goes after her. The marriage ceremony itself is very much like our own. i CLAYS DEBATE QUESTION | OF RESPONSIRLE MINISTRY! The Henry Clay Society again di gressed from the common path of cus tom in its meeting Friday night,, though only in a minor detail. In- j stead of the two or three customary I numbers, there was only one, a debate.; The debaters had more time than usual for their expositions, thus giv ing a well perpared argument. The question debated was "Re solved, that the English form of min istry. responsible to the legislative as sembly, should be submitted for th present form of Cabinet, appointed by the President of the United States of America". The affirmative was up held by Scott Benton and Siott Parker. The negative team was composed of Moyer Sink and Raymond Thomas. The judges decision was in favor of the negative. To succeed you must guess right at least 51 per cent of the time. - I We Are Prepared !! i i TO SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEEDS IN COMMERICAL PRINTING. PERIODICAL PUBLICATION A SPECI ALTY. THE GOLDEN RULE PESS South Elm St. Greensboro, N. C. WEBS HOLD MOCK TRIAL ON RECENT HEN STEALING The Websterian Literary Society | presented a well prepared and amus-1 ing program to its members and sev- j eral visitors last Friday night. For the evening the hall was con , verted into a courtroom in which Al ton Brinson was charged by Solicitor > Weir with petty larcency. The pris oner was charged with having unlaw- j fully extracated two fowls from the ! Guilford College Hennery. Wilmer I Steele acted as judge of the High Court, and after a suitabe jury had been chosen the trial started. Paul I Swanson acted as attorney for the ' defendant and tried to clear his client of the charge. Attorney Weir, repre senting the Stae, brought forth such an imposing array of facts to prove the I defendants guilt that lawyer Swanson's oratory made but slight impression i | upon the jury The prisoner was found guilty by the jury and was | sentenced to three months hard lab l bor by Judge Steele. The following officers were installed for the ensueing six weeks: Charles , Weir, president; Loyless Melvin, j secretary; and Floyd Cox, marshal. I The Society received John Andrews ] into membership. RUTH MCCOLLUM TO HEAD ZAY SOCIETY The Zays returned from their regu lar meeting Friday evening, February 5, feeling that they had spent the time in a most profitable way. Flora Mae McFadyen discussed problems of the day in an intresting manner. This was followed by a clever musical program given by Misses Beulah Al len and Breta Hollady. The officers elected for the new quarter were: President. Ruth McCollum, Secre tary, Mae Hollady; and Marshall, Bessis Butler. THE GUILFORDIAN "THE SUCCESSFUL LIFE" UISCUSSED BY Y. W. C. A. j Ola Nicholosn held the Y. W. meet- i ing of February 4th. After the scrip- ' ture reading she presented some points essential for a successful life. The life work is the most important j point on which a truly successful life is based. It is the goal that | leads men forward; it is the purpose i which gives them a stimulus to make every sacrifice which will advance that work. Therefore, the life work is not a question which chance or circum stances should decide. It is a point | which needs long careful study and divine guidance. After the life work is chose the proper use of time is the next consid eration. Time is the common pro perty in which all men share equally it is theirs for a few brief years. It is theirs to use, to spend or to throw away, but not to keep, chosen is certain to bring happiness To know that lifes work is properly even though discouragement must come to all. Real sympathy and un derstanding must be obtained by placing oneself in the other person s position. More tolerance and less criticism will follow. REV, JOSEPH H, PEELE SPEAKS IN Y. M. G. A. Rev. Joseph H. Peele leader of Y. M. C. A. last Thursday evening chose as his topic, "Conscience". "The subject of conscience," said Mr. Peele, "Is one of the broadest and most far reaching that we have for study and there could be many books written on this subject. No matter what may haw been one's en vironment there has been with him always a guiding conscience at times, but he will suffer at sometime in life from the work of his- conscience." To show the important place that ; conscience has held iiu the lives of the great writers of the past, the speak er gave a synopsis o£ Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letters, and passages from Shakespeare's "Macbeth." In these passages, the reader, illustrated how j a strong conscience will bring unjust deeds to light at some future time, by a person's own individlnal actions, j FOSTER-CAVENESS., INC.
