Page Four FRIENDLY GARDEN CLUB OF GUILFORD SPONSORS SHOW Flower Organizations from All Over the State Come to Men's Center. DR. COKER SHOWS SLIDES Great Interest Shown At Meeting in Plants, Shrubbery and Arrange ments of Them. The Friendly Garden Club of Guil ford College, a member of the State Federation of Garden Clubs, sponsored a flower show in Men's Center yester day. Displays of potted plants, shrub bery, bowl, vase, and basket arrange ments, tea tables, and other means of using flowers in the liome were seen by visitors from High Point, Greens boro, Oak Ridge, and Guilford College. Dr. Coker, head botanist at the Uni versity of North Carolina, and planner of the Arboretum there, showed slides oil "Trees" Friday night. The officers of the elub, which has as its purpose "to promote interest in highway beautifioation and individual gardens." nre: Miss Eleanor Fox, presi dent; Mrs. S. E. CAPELLA HEADS ORDER OF BATTING AVERAGES Finch and Parker Are the Only Other Men on the Team Hitting Over .300. A survey ofthe batting averages figured from games played up until to day shows three men on the team hit ting over .300 —Capella, Finch, and Parker. Jack fox l>arely misses being in the group. Jesse Finch is the lead ing distance hitter with three home runs to his credit. Miss Kvelyne Hongland spent Tues day night and Wednesday with Miss Eleanor V. Wood. Miss Iloagland is from Trenton, New Jersey, and spends her summers at Long Island, New York. Miss I'riscilla White had as her week-end guest Miss Eileen Briant who is from l'oughkeepsie, New York. Miss Briant is a student at N. C. C. W. this year. Miss Flora Bumgarner spent a few days with Miss Until Fuquay, spend ing a good portion of her days visiting her friends here at the college. Mi.ss Helen Jones, of High Point, spent the week-end with Miss Julia Blair llodgin. Miss Jones is a student at N. C. C. W. this year. Miss Rachel Beasley, former student of Guilford, was the guest of Martha Taylor and Margaret Perkins over the week-end. Misses Itutli Payne, Mina Donnell, I'elsle ltlddle, Mildred Marlette, and Helen Lowe spent the week-end with their parents in their respective homes. TO TALK AT BENNETT COLLEGE Mrs. Ernestine Milner lias made sev eral triiis during the past few weeks and spoke to various associations. Oth er talks will be made during the next two weeks. April 12 she attended the Parent- Teachers Association meet at Rankin. The topic for discussion was how tbe P. T. A. aided in training for citizen ship. April 13-14, attended the sectional meeting of tbe American Association of University Women at Spartanburg, S. C. Both business meetings and so cials comprised the program. April 17, in the afternoon, Mrs. Mil ner spoke before the P. T, A. at Dur ham on "Cultural Skills," including drama, painting, music, reading, and drawing. The theme of the meeting was "Keelothing the Skeleton." April 20-21, she attended the state meeting of the A. A. U. W. at Ashe ville. As president she presided at tile meetings, and talked on the state pro gram for the year. April 27, she will probably attend the vocational guidance conference which is being held at Cliapel Hill this week. May 7, will talk at Home Making Institute at Bennett College on the "Wise I'se of Leisure." May K, will make the commencement address at Star, N. C. May 13, will speak before the indus trial guild at Salisbury on "The Basis of Happy Marriage." April 17, at niglit attended the A. A. W. W. at Winston-Salem. The second annual Guilford County public school music concert will be given on the Guilford campus in front of the library, Saturday afternoon, May 5, as the third program in the fes tival. Over 4,000 high school and gram mar grade children will sing as one united chorus under the direction of Mr. Noah and Miss Wilbur. The University of North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, directed by Earl Slocum, formerly of Greensboro, will appear in concert in Memorial Hall Saturday evening. The orchestra will give a full program of symphonic music. The climax of the festival will come Sunday afternoon, May 6, with the pre sentation of fi program of sacred music by a massed chorus made up of the Guilford College choir, the choirs of the Church of the Covenant, the First Christian Church, and the West Market Street Methodist Church, all of Greens boro; the Greensboro Male Chorus, the Wesley Memorial Church of High Point; and the Brown Memorial Church of Winston-Salem. The chorus will in clude approximately 200 voices under the direction of Mr. Noah. Sixteen church anthems selected from Gaul, Spicker, Poteat, Elgar, Stainer, and Gounod will make up the program to bo presented by the chorus.
