Many Veterans Have
Completed Schooling
Nearly half a million World War
tl veterans who did not complete
grade school before the war have
been given the ebiance to further
their education through the GI Bill,
according to Veterans Administra
tion.
The figure is based on a VA samp
ling which disclosed that 8 per cent
of the 0,000,000 veterans who 60
far have taken GI Bill training did
not have an eighth grade education
at the time they started their GI
courses.
The sampling was made as of
June 1, 1949.
The 6,000,000 total includes 2,200,-
000 veterans who were in training
on June 1, and 3,800,000 who had
previously been enrolled but who
were not taking training on that
date,
Of the veterans enrolled under
the GI Bill at that time, 10.8 per
cent, or 240,000, had not finished
elementary school when they started.
Of those not then in training, 6.0
per cent, or 254,000 veterans, had
had seven years or less of spooling.
Nearly one-third of the 254,000
veterans taking institutional on
farm training on June 1, or 30.9
per oent, had not completed the
eighth grade when they entered
their courses.
On the same date, 15.8 per cent
of the 447,000 on-the-job trainees
and 7.7 per oent of the 1,371,000 vet
erans in educational institutions
tad gone no further than the sev
enth grade at the time they began
GI Bill training.

Page Three
The 1949 football season has bare
ly passed away land the 1949-50
basketball season is in full swing.
Guilford has already played three
games.
The Quakers lost the first one
to the highly touted McCrary Eagles
55-52, and the second to the E. C.
T. C. Pirates, 57-44. The Quakers
came back in the third game, how
ever, and beat the Ellers Blue Jack
ets 83-43.
All of these games have been
played without the services of
three Quaker staiulbys, Jack Elkins,
Kick Ferrell and Jimmy Mann. El
kins iand Mann will not be able
to play until the second semester
due to disability rulings, but Fer
rell, who has had a nerve opera
tion on his. foot, will be ready for
action soon.
Guilford's standouts thus far in
this newly - Inaugurated basketball
season have been sophomores J. T.
Ventable and Bill Osteen and fresh
man Bob Woodall. Venable has de
veloped a hook shot that "won't
quit."
Before the season got fully under
way, the Quaker basketball outlook
seemed glum. But with the play
of Venable, Osteen, Woodiall, and
the steady and dependable veteran
captain Jase Ralls and Dick Hall,
and the return of Elkins, Mann, and
Ferrell, Coach Bentz may produce
la team that will be the surprise of
the conference.
